Mayo GAA have been called out over their treatment of Kevin McStay after releasing a statement to confirm that they'd relieved the county’s senior football manager of his duties.

The statement was posted on the county board’s official website last night to say that McStay would not be seeing out the fourth year of his term.

The Ballina Stephenites clubman stepped back from his position last month following a health scare he suffered during the team’s training session which left him hospitalised, with Stephen Rochford taking charge of the team on a temporary basis.

Mayo exited the All-Ireland SFC last Sunday week after their late third round group stage loss to Donegal and last night’s short press release from the county board saw McStay and his backroom team officially relieved of their duties.

“A decision was made to relieve Kevin McStay and his management team from their roles with the Mayo Senior Football Team with immediate effect,” part of the press release read.

Mayo GAA has since come under heavy criticism for their treatment of McStay and his management team, with former All-Star defender Lee Keegan and RTE’s Des Cahill among those to hit out at the tone of the statement.
