Leinster Club Junior Camogie Championship Quarter Final

Castlepollard (Westmeath)....3.09

Navan O'Mahonys (Meath)....3.10

Castlepollard, Westmeath Junior A Camogie Champions, and the Meath Intermediate camogie champions Navan O'Mahonys, served up, despite the awful weather conditions, a superbly entertaining  high standard quarter final fixture club junior Camogie Championship last Sunday afternoon, October 27th.

For Castlepollard, it was a case of "what could have been" at Castlepollard's Mergon Park last Sunday afternoon, the Blue and Golds leading on merit by a margin of six points at half time.

Two Navan O'Mahonys goals, scored in the closing quarter of play, enabled the Meath Intermediate camogie champions to overcome the Blue and Golds by a one point margin.

Navan O'Mahonys opened brightly, two points, one each from Lauren Woods and Izzy Kinsella, giving the Meath visitors a good start! Castlepollard though thanks to two pointed frees from their No11 Caoimhe McCormack brought to Blue and Golds to parity.

The same player then edged Castlepollard in front, with Navan O'Mahonys quickly levelling matters with a Isabel O'Connor point. The teams were playing superb Camogie despite the prevailing weather conditions, Navan O'Mahonys moving ahead with a second Isabel O'Connor point.

It was now Navan O'Mahonys enjoying a good spell of attacking play, the team attired in Blue and White hoops v striking for the opening goal of this fixture via the influential Isabel O'Connor.

Castlepollard needed to respond, now trailing by a margin of four points, lest this fixture would start to slip away from them.

Castlepollard responded first with a Rebecca Ward point, and then a match levelling goal. The Castlepollard goalscorer Celeste Dermody, a winner of three Westmeath Senior A Camogie Championship medals with her previous club Lough Lene Gaels, rifled the ball to the left corner of the Navan O'Mahonys net with a crisp cross shot.

Castlepollard moved in front with a Caoimhe McCormack point, Navan O'Mahonys drawing level with yet another point from Isabel O'Connor.

Castlepollard finished first half scoring in dramatic fashion with two Celeste Dermody.

The first goal was a clever flick to the Navan O'Mahonys net from close range, following a Jeanette Greville struck probing centre. The third Castlepollard goal from their No15 was a low kicked effort past Navan O'Mahonys No1 Mags Tomkins, who quickly raced off her line, and then hesitated in her advance for a critical moment.

Half time scoreline

Castlepollard....... ....3.05

Navan O'Mahonys....1.05

Navan O'Mahonys, playing towards the road end of Mergon Park in the second half, reduced their arrears with a point each from Laoise McDermott and Jorja Keogh (free) in near quick succession. Castlepollard replied with a Jeanette Greville point, only for Laoise McDermott to build upon her team's encouraging start to second half with her second point of this fixture.

Then came the second Navan O'Mahonys goals, Isabel O'Connor the goalscorer, despite a superb attempt by Castlepollard goalkeeper Lauren Murray to prevent the concession of that goal.

Such was the power of the parting shot from the Navan O'Mahonys No11, the forward momentum of the ball took it into the Castlepollard net.

Castlepollard 3.06 Navan O'Mahonys 2.06 was now the match scoreline.

The impressive Isobel O'Connor then added two points to her thanks total, leaving a one point margin, (3.06 to 2.08 dividing the teams. Castlepollard nerves were then steadied with a Caoimhe McCormack. There was no doubt though that the playing momentum of this fixture was now starting to favour Navan O'Mahonys more and more!

Two minutes later, Navan O'Mahonys were on level terms, the ball from a Jorja Keogh taken 45m award dropped into a crowded Castlepollard goalmouth, and into the net for a third goal for the visiting team. A point each from Laoise McDermott and Lily Dwyer left Navan O'Mahonys 3.10 to 3.08 ahead as the end of normal playing time approached.
