Former Dublin footballer Conor McHugh is set to line out for the county’s hurlers this year.

New hurling boss Niall Ó Ceallachain confirmed after Dublin’s Allianz League Division 1B opening round win over Antrim last Saturday that the 30-year-old is part of his squad after starring for Ó Ceallachain’s Na Fianna charges in their All-Ireland club SHC triumph earlier this month.

The surprise switch comes after McHugh won four All-Ireland medals in a seven-year stint with the Dublin footballers from 2015 to ‘21. However, he made just 20 appearances in that time, failing to establish himself in a star-studded attack after showing huge promise at underage level which culminated in him winning the U21 Footballer of the Year Award in 2014.

Another of Na Fianna’s All-Ireland winning contingent, Brian Ryan, has also committed to the Dublin hurlers after winning the Liam MacCarthy Cup with Limerick in 2020. He transferred to the Mobhi Road club from South Liberties in 2023.
