Gaeil Colmcille 1-17 Kilmessan 0-13
Pitch 6 in Dunganny was the venue for this Intermediate Hurling Championship third round meeting between Gaeil Colmcille and Kilmessan. Tiernan Anderson top scored with eight points in a game that remained close until a Shane Callaghan goal ten minutes from time gave the Kells men the impetus they needed to push on and take the two points.
Kilmessan, who were more efficient in the opening seven minutes, found themselves three points to one ahead but by the tenth minute Anderson had added two points to his opening score to level the sides. Points from Evan Sheridan and Dylan Roche pushed Kells ahead before Kilmessan pointed from play. A good save from stand in goalkeeper Conall McGovern denied Kilmessan a goal midway through the half and his clearance ended with Andrew Gormley splitting the posts. Kilmessan pointed twice from play to restore parity and the sides were even again with five minutes of the half remaining after trading frees. Liam Devine and Gary McGovern points put the Gaeils ahead again and Kilmessan responded with a free to leave the minimum between the teams at halftime.
A point from play and another from a free saw Kilmessan take the lead for what would be the final time. Over the next ten minutes Kells outscored their opponents by four points to one with their scores coming from Sheridan, Anderson (2) and McGovern. At this stage the Gaeils defence was getting to grips will the opposition attack and with ten minutes left, the critical score of the game arrived. Shane Callaghan surged forward from the halfback line and fired the ball to the net. The Gaeils maintained their five point lead when two more Kilmessan points from play were each cancelled out by Anderson frees. These scores came before and after another fine save by Conall McGovern. Kells finished strongly with two further points from Callaghan and Sheridan rounding off the scoring.
