Drumconrath 1-14, Kilmainham 0-9
The thought’s of Kilmainham fielding a second team at the beginning of the year seemed to be up there with the most off the chart ideas going. In Castletown on Saturday 9th August 2025 Kilmainham somehow fielded. Not only did they field but they had four subs despite a few eligible players away. Mickey Newman and Paul Farrelly must take a lot of credit for gathering bodies. Some for their last last dance and some for their first dance in a Kilmainham jersey! It was brilliant to be able to offer football to lads that have been training away with the first team all year. Playing games is where the real learning is. Kilmainham struggled to win enough ball in midfield in the first half. Drumconrath were more efficient up front and found scores easier to come by. Adam McManus departed with a hamstring injury to be replaced by Paddy Hennigan after 20 minutes. Drumconrath led by 5 points at half time.
The second half continued in a similar pattern with Drumconrath able to keep their noses in front on the scoreboard. Mark Newman and Andy Arkins were lively and knew where the scoreboard was, unfortunately we didn’t convert a few decent goal chances that may have kept the score tighter. Drumconrath ran out deserving winners in this first round tie played in Castletown due to works been carried out on Drumconrath’s home pitch.
A first ever game of football for Alan Thompson and for most of the team a first competitive match for of the year. It was brilliant to see the large crowd there to support the team. There were loads of kids watching their parents play football for Kilmainham. Something they won’t forget. Congratulations to Phily Mahon on being appointed team captain. It is well deserved. The lads have a bye in round two and will have a home fixture against St. Paul’s in round three on Saturday 6th September at 6pm. Plenty of time to get some training in!!
