Dunderry 0-21 Kilmessan 1-17
An Evan Nolan free commenced proceedings after Mark Leavy was fouled.
The Blues respond with a free. Nolan from play was next after link up play between Darcy and Dempsy.
Kilmessan score from play to leave it at two a piece. Barron and Rian Fay linked up with the latter scoring. Barron scored the next one after Mark Leavy dropped out to him. Kilmessan pull it back with a point from play. Darragh Fay - who everyone thought would miss a few games after the hit he got in the football- tore up the line , hit the other Fay on the forty who offloaded to Leavy for a fine point. Fay was involved in the next score again with a sideline cut straight into Barrons hand and he made no mistake pointing. Six to three mid way through the opening half. Kilmessan turn the screw a bit though and land the next seven including two frees. Dunderry were in a bit of bother. The next Kilmessan play however was cut out by Ó Laoire, he was fouled and Nolan converted. Another Nolan free left it 0-8 to 0-10 at the interval.
The Blue corner landed the first blow on the restart putting three between the neighbours. Kelly the Meadstown man stood up today and struck over powerfully after Leavy sent the sliothar out to him in space. Corner forward supreme Leavy pointed next after a trademark Tracy run found him with time to pull the trigger. Happy Birthday Willie.Darcy got his first score of this years campaign after Barron reached highest and played it out for him. Nolan converted another free to level proceedings. Dunderry needed to take the lead and push on but Kilmessan had other ideas and retake the lead from play.
Leavy, causing problems all day was fouled the next two times the ball was put in front of him and who better than Nolan to convert both to lead by the minimum - but a lead they wanted most and deserved. Kilmessan come back with a free and the sides are back level again. Nolan struck a sweet 65 followed by a free after Kelly was taken down. The team in blue were relying on frees to keep them in the game and in turn reduce the margin to one once more. Kelly was to the fore in the next play when he brought Tracy into play and he in turn passed to Niall Darcy who picked off his second of the evening. A great score. A point the opposite end from play had it 0-17 against 0-16.
Substitute Donagh Ó Laoire's first involvement saw him pass out to the man in the better position- who else but Kelly to put two between the teams. Fellow Substitute Jordan Martin drilled over an inspirational point following another pass from Ó Laoire. When Nolan converted the next free it put four between them. Go on Dunderry.
A goal mouth scramble lead to the last thing Timber Leavy wanted - a penalty to Kilmessan. Faygo almost had it but alas, the green flag was raised. Typical Kilmessan, they followed that up with a point from play to tie it up again. But who should have the last word only the young Leavy fella in the corner who collected, was fouled, had the advantage but wanted to put an end to the torture and pointed superbly from play.
That was it. Full time. Possibly the first time Dunderry have beaten Kilmessan in senior Championship hurling?
A great game, well Marshalled by the man in the middle. And Hurling Stalwarts Kilmessan, with former Meath great Stephen Clynch in goals were ever gracious in defeat as only you'd expect from a team with him involved.
All Timber Leavy could muster up was " A great team performance? " and it sure was.
