Rathkenny's Joey Curtis

Rathkenny took the two points available with a twelve-point victory over Kilmainham in this ‘P S Supplies Doors and Floors’ football league division three, round nine clash.

Rathkenny 2-15 Kilmainham 0-09

Rathkenny were wearing their ‘Breedon’ sponsored changed kit of white for the first time. The hosts were quicker out of the traps, but squandered three scoring opportunities in the opening minutes, before David Curtis popped over the opening score from a fifth minute free. Noah McBride then sent over two further frees as the clock ticked past ten minutes. The visitors opened their account with a twelfth minute free. David Curtis added his second and Rathkennys fourth before James O’Hare added another from play as the first quarter finished.

Kilmainham then sent over their second of the evening before Patrick Knowles called for a mark and sent over on nineteen minutes. Things got better for the hosts when the clock approached the twenty-minute mark. James O’Hare went on a surging run and as he neared the Kilmainham goal, he deftly passed to the unmarked Noah Jenkinson who turned on the edge of the square and calmly slotted to the net as the hosts stretched the lead to seven points. Kilmainham had a purple patch that produced two points and a goal chance that was well saved by Rathkenny keeper Cathal McCabe. James O’Hare added his second of the night from play as we approached the final minute of the half. It was left to the visitors to send over the final first half score, before Peter O’Halloran blew the half time whistle. Rathkenny 1-07 Kilmainham 0-05.

Kilmainham opened the second half scoring with a pointed free on the thirty-fifth minute. Rathkenny finally found their second half scoring boots as David Curtis sent over a free on forty minutes. James Macken was unlucky to see a long-range effort come back of the posts before twenty seconds later making no mistake with a follow up pointed effort. The visitors sent over their second point of the half with a free on forty-three minutes.

Substitute Joey Curtis sent over Rathkennys third point of the second half from a free. Kilmainham sent over two frees in a row to narrow the gap to four points on forty-nine minutes. It proved to be their final scores of the game. Over the final ten minutes, Rathkenny moved up a gear and a Joey Curtis pointed free was quickly followed by one from play by Noah Jenkinson. Padraig McKeever sent over a lovely point following a slick Rathkenny passing move. Less than a minute later Christy Meade benefitted from great work by Ross Gore as he produced a great turnover, laid it off to Christy Meade who buried to the net. Joey Curtis closed out the scoring with two further points (one from play one free). Rathkenny almost had a third goal, but Oisin Cummins Fuller saw his effort blocked out for a fort- five which came to nothing.
