FL Div 3: Depleted Vincents lose out in Dunsany

St. Vincents Paddy McGill

Dunsany 2-10 St Vincents 0-06

St. Vincent’s travelled to Dunsany for this Round 9 fixture of Division 3 on Saturday afternoon. The storm clouds brewing overhead set the scene for what would be our toughest game so far this year. Several selection changes were forced by injuries, holidays and the leaving cert to make this an even tougher proposition.

The home side started the brightest when they burst through from the throw in but only managed to hit the side netting. They also were wide of the mark from a free and struck the upright before taking the lead with the opening point from play in the 5th minute. Nigel Hand had the first real chance for St. Vincent’s, but he was denied by the upright. He made amends shortly after with a well taken point from play to draw the sides level. Both sides tried to use every inch of the pitch to stretch their opponents. Dunsany took the lead again with a point from a forward mark. St. Vincent’s levelled it up again when Conor Harford found Patrick McGill in space, and he fired over the bar. Dunsany retook the lead with a well worked point from play. Gary Tuite was taken out on his way towards goal and suffered a shoulder injury as a result and needed to be replaced. St. Vincent’s pushed hard to find an equaliser, but it was the home side who would finish the scoring in the half with a pointed free before Pat Clarke blew for half time.

Half Time, Dunsany 0-04 St Vincents 0-02

The second half saw Dunsany again start quickly with a point from play inside the first minute. They followed this up with a shot on goal, which squeezed past Evan Connor, but Mark Crawley cleared the ball from the line. The home side stretched their lead with a 45 taken short and pointed from play. A great pass from Conor Harford found Robbie Lynch in front of goals but he was met with a crunching tackle as he took his shot. Nigel Hand slotted over the free before pointing again from play to leave 2 points between the sides. The Ardcath men pushed hard but the Dunsany defence stood firm. The home side got the next score with a point fisted over the bar. Robbie Lynch found Patrick McGill inside and he slotted over a point from a tight angle to again leave 2 points between the sides. The killer blow came in the 21st minute of the second half. A wayward pass was intercepted by Dunsany, who pushed hard towards goal and Evan Connor could do nothing about the strike to the back of the net. They added another point from play to increase their lead. Nigel Hand added another pointed free when Adam Tuite was dragged down on his way towards goal. The home side responded with a pointed free of their own shortly after. Dunsany added to the scoreline with a well taken goal in the 28th minute and a point on the stroke of full time to secure the victory.
