A GAA pitch named after Detective Garda Colm Horkan, who was killed in the line of duty, was officially opened by Taoiseach Simon Harris yesterday.

The Colm Horkan Memorial Pitch and Community Walkway at Fr O'Hara Park in Charlestown was developed at a cost of €1.5 million. Detective Garda Horkan, who played for Charlestown Sarsfields, was murdered while on duty in Castlerea, Co Roscommon in June 2020.

Mr Harris described the pitch opening as a day of community celebration and pride and also a day of grief at the loss of Detective Garda Horkan.

“A fitting tribute to him and his incredible service and impact,” the Taoiseach posted on X after the ceremony.
