Ardee St Mary clinched their third Louth senior football championship title in-a-row after coming out on top in a low-scoring final against Naomh Mairtín.
It finished 2-2 to 0-4 at a wet and windy Haggardstown, where Daire McConnon’s goal with five minutes left in normal time put St Mary’s on the path to another Joe Ward Cup success.
The tough conditions brought on by Storm Ashley were reflected on the half-time scoreboard, with a Cian Moran goal in the early stages enough for the holders to carry in a 1-0 to 0-1 lead at the break.
Jonathan Commins stretched that advantage five minutes into the restart and, while Naomh Mairtín got points back from ace attacker Sam Mulroy and Val Leddy, McConnon’s late strike would ensure a 13th SFC triumph for the men from Ardee.
