Monaghan and Louth shared the points after a cracking All-Ireland SFC round 2 in Clones finished 2-10 to 2-10 this afternoon.

In the end, it was Sam Mulroy’s 68th minute free that denied the home side a come from behind win that would’ve marked in Group 4 having lost heavily to Kerry in the opening round.

Louth had been 0-3 to 0-2 up when Craig Lennon sent in their first goal in the 20th minute and, despite their neighbours hitting back with a major of their own via Conor McCarthy two minutes later, a Conor Grimes goal on the eve of half-time saw the visitors take in a 2-5 to 1-3 advantage.

Michael Bannigan, Gary Mohan and Ryan O’Toole sent over scores that trimmed the Farney men’s deficit to two early in the resumption, but Ger Brennan’s men were able to push it out to five again after a couple of Ryan Burns points and another Mulroy free.

Monaghan saw a couple of chances drop wide after that but a Brannigan goal with 10 minutes remaining ignited them and they’d hit the front after a Conor McManus free was backed up by another from Rory Beggan.

The All-Star goalkeeper’s strike looked to be grabbing the headlines until Mulroy sent over his last placed ball of the day to ensure a share of the spoils for the Wee County.
