'I don't miss it'

Brian Cody insists he doesn’t miss being involved in hurling at the highest level.

It’s just over two years since the James Stephens man bowed out after 24 years of unprecedented success with Kilkenny which included 11 All-Ireland SHC wins, 18 Leinster SHC titles and 10 Allianz League successes.

“I still watch it . . . I don’t miss being involved to be honest, no I don’t. It’s just the way I am. Did I enjoy it? Of course, I enjoyed it but the game goes ahead and I am not involved in it [at inter-county level] now. And I can’t say I miss it,” he told reporters at this week’s Hurling Development Committee event in Croke Park.

“I was enjoying it, but I didn’t own the job. An opportunity was there for someone else to come in and take it on. So it was just a natural evolution of what happens. I suppose I spent longer there than most people.”

The Hurling Development Committee member also spoke of his desire to see every child with a hurl in their hand.

“The first thing we have to do is try to give young children the opportunity to play the game because that's not happening everywhere,” he continued.

“And if you do give them the opportunity, I know that they do love it. They absolutely love it. That's really the starting point for the committee.

“Hurling is part of our culture, it's our national game. The quality of the game itself is terrific obviously. When people see it and watch it, they do see how terrific it is. Children want to play the game so let's give them the opportunity.”
