Older people who saw them all seldom had any doubt about Ring. I used to love listening to my Tipp biased Dad and uncles talking about him surviving determined attempts to have him carried off on a stretcher to do things they claimed no one else could. Walking off the pitch be an achievement in itself by the sounds of it! Few players have that ability to turn games almost singlehandedly, Ones I've seen include Doran, DJ, JBM. Canning, I would have to give Canning the nod because he combined the magic with the stats. His performance against Cork that day in Thurles is unequalled in modern game. And much as Katser and DNA would incline me to prefer a Martian invasion to Galway winning anything, I was glad to see him winning that medal. He's an amazing player and his contribution is enormous but in pure hurling terms Damien Reck and Rory o Connor are both better hurlers in my opinion. First of all 9801 my apologies, that was a terribly worded post on my behalf! I suppose what I meant was, I went to a primary school in Dublin that is GAA mad and is known for producing quite a few Dublin footballers down the years. So when you started in that school, age 4, you were straight out on to the pitches getting football literally kicked into you;-). So I've no real memory of ever not being involved in football. I just assumed it would be similar in a GAA mad dual county like Galway, I just assumed you would be straight in to football and hurling as soon as you started primary. I read a book by Raymond Smith, in it there is a quote which states of Hopper McGrath ' no Wexford forward was more feared or respected by the Tipperary backs during the 1960s'. Unfortunately there are large swathes of galway city (where I grew up) where interest in hurling is almost non existent,,, I only followed soccer until 1998 when I got behind the galway team who won the all Ireland,, and got into hurling the following year,, Dj Careys sublime performance against offaly in the leinster final had me mesmerised. Lets keep it that way and where memory serves us we'll take time the admire all the greats from all counties. I could give a long list from all over and not name them all. I am closet to our own. The likes of Tony Brown who played for 23 years. Brick , Dan and the genial Paul Flynn. That is just of one period in time. Mossy Walsh, Mossy Whelan,Pat McGrath,Shamie Hannon from another period and on and on back to 1959. The game has given us great memories and great players. Long may it last. And are in the semifinal of the u16A Michael Foley Cup this year on Saturday coming. Maybe there are a new generation of great Waterford hurlers on their way? You looked to be running away with it only Larry Murphy came on and changed the game. Couldn't believe we turned it around. That was a brilliant Waterford team. His average score rate from play was incredible and his passion unmatched.
