He meant over the entire season. Read the post more carefully buddy!!

And 82,000 isn't the highest individual attendance ever. I think that attendances hit about 90,000 in the 1960s

It couldnt because croke park was never as big but it could not of been this because my dad told ground could only 65000 for finals in 1996 so could not be 90,000

That is correct, the highest ever attendance at a match in Ireland was Down vs Offaly in 1961 at 90,556. The interesting fact though is that this was the OFFICIAL attendance, ie gate receipts. Estimates reckon that over 100,000 people packed into Croke Park that day, photographs show rows of supporter on the sidelines and the roof of the Hogan Stand!!

They used to be able to get 90,000 in alright. The capacity did come down alright to the 65,000 mark as I presume safety measures had to be met.

Sure they 48,000 in Dalymount Park once. It's amazing what you could do when health and safety wasn't an issue!

It was that attendance and it was in Croke Park. Safety and crowd control wasn't a big an issue in those days so they were able to squeeze a lot more in.

Good man, and princess margaret threw in the ball after both captains kissed the bishop of canterbury's ring. Offaly never appeared in the second half as they had to be on the train to holyhead from Euston at 4.15.

1958 Wembley at Whit
The British GAA rent Wembley Stadium for the hosting of an exhibition of Gaelic Games. This venture was so successful that 'Wembley at Whit' became an annual date on the British GAA's calendar until 1975; in 1962 over 40,000 spectators attended the challenge game.

Please consult your history books before entering this debate. Down first took part in the Wembley Tournament in 1959 when they defeated Galway by 3-09 to 4-04 before a crowd of 32,000. This tournament was a regular feature in London for the many Irish emigrants living there, and indeed to this day London field a team in the Connacht Championship, as do New York. Down were also the first gaelic football team to do a coast to coast tour of America. So the match referred to above was indeed played in Wembley, and the match at Croke Park in 1961 is to this day the highest recorded figure for a single fixture held on the Island of Ireland.
