Spot on, Oldtourman. Of course Cork have some very skillful players, but I wouldn't agree that they are the most skillful team. For years we were told that Cork club games were being refereed too strictly, and that, as a result, their players weren't able to deal with the physical stuff that was being allowed by inter-county referees. You certainly couldn't make that argument now. Not only are they well able to compete physically, they have a number of players who seem to like provoking their opponent. Cork may be no different to most other teams in this regard, but I would not accept that any lapses in discipline occur only when they are retaliating to provocation.

Some of the most skilful hurlers never make it at intercounty unfortunately.

She might have. She could have had a sojourn at Limerick between 1973 to 2018. Who knows she could be plying her wares in Waterford since 1959, but she's a versatile witch!

It's ok to be physical and I like it, but losing a player in today's game is not on. Need 15 on 15 at all times, and even getting 2 yellows isn't too difficult. There'll be a lot of sending offs both in hurling and football, as we saw in Cork vs Kerry at weekend!

there is a fine line between aggression and over aggression, between showing you wont get pushed around versus indiscipline and giving away too many frees and having guys sent off

Limerick beat up other teams for years with their physicality. There was plenty of skill and they were tactically excellent, but physicality and aggression was part of it
I think for Cork in particular the 2021 All Ireland left lots of scars when they were bullied of the field (as somebody who saw Limerick ship lots of heavy beatings at the hands of Cork down the years it must have been hard for Cork to stomach)
Clare seemed to have hit a sweet spot in terms of aggression and not going over the edge and losing players to cards
Cork have definitely become more physical (they have plenty of big men) and aggressive. But sometimes they go over and have lost players to red cards in big games. It must be a concern for their management but its easier to ratchet it than to build it up. And I dont think it isolated ill-discipline, I think its just a consequence of playing on the edge, and inevitably going over it. But with time they can improve
I thought Tipp really stepped up in this regard on Sunday. Their tackling, the skirmish at the start. They drew some yellow cards but walked the line well and also didnt concede too many frees (Limerick only hit 6 points from frees and didnt miss too many).

I'd say she came from one of those families where daddy desperately wanted a son......

Kilkenny must be pleased at the Munster teams knocking the hell out of each other. They'll probably reach the semis without bother, have 6 top class forwards, and will feel that this is their year!

I agree aggression and playing on the edge is needed certainly, but it is a delicate balancing act. In the last couple of years Limerick went from having it perfectly timed, to over doing it, to having to reign it back in because there was a perception that they were still overdoing it (when they were not). The most pleasing part of the Limerick v Tipperary match last week end for me was the return of the clean aggression from both sides particularly in the midfield and half forwards of both teams and no real dirty tackles or hits. Just two teams going at it for all their worth.
