Its really difficult to figure out what we should be doing here. I don't think many people would be clamoring to put Division 3 games live on TV but surely having it part of a highlights package would be a start. As for the promotion angle - there were 6,950 people at the Kildare v Laois game in Newbridge on Saturday night. A local rivalry put on at the right time gets a decent crowd. I could be corrected - but that's a Division 3 match with more in attendance than any League of Ireland soccer game over the weekend. For putting the games on TV - I'd suggest that the GAA should agree with the TV stations a fixed program of when the games will be on. Sell the Football and Hurling rights separately to RTE, VM or TG4 so we have a Friday Evening 7PM, Saturday Evening 7PM and 2 Sunday afternoon matches on for each code each weekend. Want to watch a Hurling Game? TG4 have that; want to watch a football game - that will be on VM or likewise. Knowing a small bit about TV scheduling - having an inconsistent product doesn't help at all. There needs to be games to show every weekend; so if there's no Division 1 games to show - we need to have Division 2 games to show. If you want to see Ireland play the top tier nations in The Aviva be prepared to stump up a minimum of €145 for a decent seat. That's for a Category B ticket. A Category A seat is €160. A slight exaggeration perhaps to suggest that people in Limerick and Cork are getting very disillusioned with Rugby, however disillusioned perhaps at Mighty Munster falling in popularity because of their performance as a team in competition is it not.? Rugby is catching the imagination of all sports minded people, so it's incorrect to say a lot of people in Limerick and Cork are getting very disillusioned with Rugby, rather they are getting disillusioned with their teams' overall performance and full-time results. Most players realize the fact that they may never play the game at the highest level, they are happy to take part in the game any play it as a recreational sport. The gaa has nothing to worry about, there is plenty of room for Rugby, Soccer and Gaelic games they have competed against each other for years with no evidence of sporting causalities. An active and visual P.R.O should be a work in progress to promote, foster and grow gaelic games as required. Doesn't Michael Martin's son play in goals for Cork, why would he be anti GAA? It was a disgrace yesterday with 3 provincial rugby games on and then the women's game aswell while at the same time Tyrone/Armagh and Dublin/Wexford is on. EVERY provincial rugby does not have to be shown every week on Irish TV. This I don't get people always seem to ignore if we were go back to old dates championship would clash depending on year with euros,worlds cups, olympics. I agree with Updewell. It is not like they Irish provinces are winning. They all lost. Looks like I might have to invest in GAA+. Which I don't really want to. But that seems to be the only way to watch our "national games". " Very few people play rugby as a recreational sport. It's basically a private schools game. Like American football. How many adult rugby teams are there in Carlow? Four maybe? Two each at Tullow and Carlow? Must be around 50 adult Gaelic football sides and 20 hurling. Soccer God only knows how many. 60? I do watch the League of Ireland and a bit of English, but not as much as before (long time Waterford and Leeds fan, for my sins) but I don't follow it at junior level, so I would not be sure. Rugby is very much a minority sport. While I think a few of the posters here are a bit OTT, it's fair to say that rugby is being pushed down people's throats. Don't forget that a lot of the event junkie popularity comes from the amount of PR and coverage it's getting. As a sports person, I also don't think rugby is a particularly great athletic pursuit. Soccer players and Gaelic footballers are far superior in terms of skills. There was a bit of skill in amateur era rugby, but now it's basically just oversized gym freaks crashing into each other. I'd have to ask about promotion of gaelic games..Galway/Offaly and Tyrone/Armagh not shown on any channel..next weekend 1 hurling match but that's behind a paywall..this weekend alone there were 7 rugby matches available free to air,I'm sure this will help rugby in promotional stakes..I know people will say they don't need it..maybe the Gaa don't care anymore..it really is a pity that tg4 weren't considered.. Irish media and Government are dominated by Middle Ireland. Middle Ireland is dominated by Fee paying schools, rugby playing schools. Absolutely they have. We are burying games in a packed schedule..so.many class games don't be seen because they're all on at same time. Then we don't have replays. You'd have an epic game plus extra time going to penalties. The replay was such a big thing in GAA calender and culture,.it would generate its own excitement.
