We had 21 scores from 40 shots, cork had 79% conversion rate which is excellent. Easy to see where we need to improve. On another day we could have had 30 points and won comfortably as alot of the 20 missed chances were fairly routine. southmeathgael (Meath) - Posts: 945 - 27/01/2025 08:32:54 2587826 Link 2 |
I think the new rules generally allow teams to play football and be positive, hence the high scores, so I wouldn't put my confidence in us based on that.. Cavan hit 18 points in their loss, Down hit 1-20 in their loss. Not sure how many 2 pointers either of those teams had, I think we have 1 maybe 2. I definitely think we played well, and could have won it. But Defensive woes and just been very venerable when Cork ran directly at us was worrying hyperache (Meath) - Posts: 259 - 27/01/2025 10:59:45 2587844 Link 0 |
An entertaining first game and we didn't play too badly albeit it puts us under pressure this week because you're up against it if you lose your first 2 games. We won 57% of our own kickouts, won 56% of Cork's kickouts and we had 40 shots to their 24. So we had enough of the play to win but Cork did create more goal chances than we did and even though we had 40 shots I don't remember too many misses we had that were sitters where you couldn't believe we had missed. I think elements of the new rules suit us. We've a big 8-12, we have forwards which should make hay with the extra space. But there are a couple of areas we need to improve. Either we need a sitting 6 who will protect the full back line better or the full back line will have to improve this week. I'd be fairly confident for the Cavan game and wouldn't make too many changes. I'd probably bring in Jones for Curtis because the game seems to be gone back to 50/50 long kickouts. And then maybe just defining the role of who is playing 6 a bit better and trying to get Frayne to not drop as deep to get on ball and try get him higher up the pitch. Other than that I would be happy enough albeit it with a bit of pressure on for the game on Sunday LeitrimRoyal99 (Meath) - Posts: 1536 - 27/01/2025 14:53:23 2587939 Link 3 |

Few of positives to take from that game and try to Build on them. Thought Menton was very good at Midfield. Full back line was left exposed at times and really struggled. Scoring 21 points was impressive when Only 2 forwards really played Morris and Costello. Definitely need changes in the half forward line they were all poor. We missed so many chances and that was the losing of it. But I think one failing by Robbie Brennan when naming his match day 26 players was naming the two Hogans, he should have listed either Billy or Harry. We missed a trick and he should have named our third goalie (Luke Mitchell) listed in the 26 instead of Harry, and in a situation like yesterday when we are in a losing position in the last few minutes, he should have brought Mitchell on for Billy who got up the field in scoreable positions towards the end of the game and kicked wide twice with not great pressure on him, if he had Mitchell as 2nd choice keeper ( not third choice as he is now) he could have brought him on for the last few minutes and you then have a guy for those last few minutes who not only has a great kick out as shown in the challenge games but also has the skill level to put those chances away it could make a difference. madmeath (Meath) - Posts: 88 - 28/01/2025 00:51:20 2588076 Link 1 |
Full back line was really poor, and the half back line wasn't much better. Cork just ran at us, and we had no answer. They kicked 12 frees or so, all just lazy challenges. Midfiield was solid, Jack Flynn is a really powerful runner and Costello and Morris were really lively. Eoghan Frayne never got into it, and Shane Walsh wasn't up to a whole lot either. Ronan Jones looked lively when he came on too. Lots to improve on and a must win game on Sunday. hyperache (Meath) - Posts: 259 - 28/01/2025 11:33:49 2588137 Link 0 |
Very different coaching setup between this year and last year not to mention some of the experienced players we have now back into the fold now to lend some leadership to a very young team. We could barely muster up 15 scoring chances last year never mind 40! Big game this weekend no doubt but I've plenty of belief in this team to put in a performance Sunday
