"MOTION 20: The proposal is to change the Lory Meagher Cup to include New York to play in the competition. The second placed team in the round robin section would play a semi-final against New York in Ireland. If New York end up being promoted, no team would be relegated from the Nickey Rackard to replace them. Whatever upper tier New York end up in, then that would have an extra team in it with the same format applied. New York would play a semi-final against the second placed team. In any year that New York fails to reach a final, they would be involved in a relegation play-off against the bottom round robin team." Typical situation of a motion passing at Congress and then complaining at the reality. Why was the game played in Mullingar? Monaghan at the very very least should have had home advantage. What happens in 2026 if New York lose a Rackard semi final. If New York beat the bottom placed in the playoff. Do the bottom team and Meagher winner keep the Rackard at 7 counties or do the bottom team then play the Meagher winner so that "six group teams" are maintained at Rackard level? legendzxix (Kerry) - Posts: 8867 - 24/05/2025 15:48:42 2612050 Link 0 |
Its just not fair to Monaghan, battling through a group for this treatment. sponger (Wicklow) - Posts: 2930 - 24/05/2025 16:34:33 2612061 Link 0 |
Great scoring there by our boys! 1-29 is something like what Limerick hurlers would put up, when on song. I'd say if you drew a line from across from Dublin to Galway, and excluded Antrim from the counties above that line (Antrim is in Leinster anyway for hurling), would it be accurate to say that New York would probably beat any of the counties north of that line? Now, if that is true, isn't this situation a terrible indictment of the state of hurling in Ireland? Is our New York a stronger dual county than more than half the counties in all of Ireland, both north and south? foreveryoung (USA) - Posts: 2265 - 24/05/2025 16:52:20 2612066 Link 0 |
Of course it's great scoring it's a senior team against a junior team. Not saying it's New York's fault but they shouldn't be in it that's what people are saying. Shoulda started at Mcdonagh and found their level that way.

NY wouldn't get near Down Derry and possibly not Donegal either.

Not only Is it not fair. Its a terrible wrong. This is the Gaa trying to placate New York while pi**ing down on the weaker Hurling counties in Ireland.

How are they your boys? You are from Florida and they are from Ireland.

Bad and all as we have been this year we would still beat ye 30 points. You listen too much to that yellow clown in the white house.

It was a good win for New York but nothing spectacular against one of the weakest hurling counties in Ireland. Carlow, Laois and Kildare would beat New York out the gate in the McDonagh cup. Past hurler (None) - Posts: 951 - 24/05/2025 17:37:20 2612094 Link 0 |
It's a closer level for them. They won today at a canter, they ran the bench handy. They could have won by a lot more. They should have went in at Mcdonagh and if they take a hammering that's better than handing one out, feel for Monaghan. Hope Cavan turn them over next week

New York can't travel for a full round robin series. My understanding was the onus was on New York to bring forward a format to Congress. Again, where was any motion for New York to start off in the McDonagh instead? New York could be playing Laois in a semi final instead. legendzxix (Kerry) - Posts: 8867 - 24/05/2025 18:28:19 2612119 Link 0 |
Yes I understand that but the idea they come in to the lowest tier is stupid. It shows disrespect to the teams at that level. Every single person knows they are too strong for that level. I'm not saying there was an option to put them into Mcdonagh but going in to LM was not the best solution

Congratulations to New York. Not New York's fault but was ompletey unfair on Monaghan and other Teams in tge championship. Has denied them or other team who put effort in to get to a semi final, the opportunity to play in Croke Park. Of course the format was agreed and known in advance, but doesn't mean it is fair. As NY only get a max of 2 matches, how about the winners of the Rackard and Ring cups are invited over to New York to compete in a three way competition instead. The incentive would help promote hurling in the counties in those competitions and also in NY. Firceall (Offaly) - Posts: 39 - 24/05/2025 18:56:29 2612135 Link 2 |
Thats a great idea, be good incentive to win the Rackard and Ring cups too. I presume if New York win the Lory Meagher this year they go straight into the semi-final of the Nicky Rackard next year? Past hurler (None) - Posts: 951 - 24/05/2025 20:50:36 2612182 Link 0 |
Was listening to some of the early commentary on RnaG. Presenter noted that Monaghan manager was "ní mó ná sásta" with the decision. One of first players mentioned was Johnny Glynn 2017 AI winner with Galway scoring a point! That's just absurd. Would he be allowed tog for a Junior C team in a county championship? No offence to Rackard counties but that is the valid comparison. Glynn would probably get a start with every team below Senior inter county and a few in it. GAA more worried about New York than teams in our own country, so much for trying to promote the game in the weaker counties, it's an insult to all the good people in these counties trying to keep the game going.

Its fantastic for NY to be given the opportunity. Only logistical means it could work.
countyman2022 (Wexford) - Posts: 809 - 25/05/2025 12:50:43 2612351 Link 1 |
Why should they get that opportunity? At the cost of teams already in the competition?
Bon (Kildare) - Posts: 2359 - 25/05/2025 13:48:07 2612369 Link 0 |
Well clearly they have earned the right to be there? What would you rather they do? Stay in NY and get no games?

Its a joke and totally unfair.
