Ah that's grand. Then we're almost certainly relegated.

See offaly beat us by 4 pints in under 19 development league. Very worrying sign from our under age again or just all about development? hunting (Wexford) - Posts: 1079 - 14/03/2025 22:18:30 2596423 Link 0 |
From what I've heard in work and all down through the years from lads from Limerick, Cork, Clare and Tipp is 'hurling needs Wexford at the top table' 'if we don't win it Jesus I'd love to see Wexford win it'. We're almost seen as a feel good story more so than contenders when we get to something like the quarter finals because we cant win a do or die knockout championship game . On your second point would agree in terms of the crowd issue and I'd put that down to form of the team because it's even an issue at home games too tbh. 2017 Leinster semi final had people queueing from the office down to the road in the park for tickets, we brought about 35k to the final, 2023 round robin game against Kilkenny and you could argue a lot more was at stake, no more than 10,000 at it. There was 6,000 at the Galway game last year, granted the two games before that were horror shows and it clashed with the Heineken cup, fairly sure double that travelled to KK for the last game in the group when there was a spot in a Leinster final up for grabs, people will follow success, you saw that in 2019 too when there was a Leinster title and a spot in an All Ireland Final on the line. I'm not being cynical but we're no different than any other county - the vast majority at big games are there when the going gets good and the sun is splitting the rocks. You'll have a few hundred then who'll follow their county through thick and thin which this forum probably accounts for a good few of in our case. I wouldn't be too worried losing a close under 19 game to a good side in the beginning of march.

We had noone from our u20 panel playing on our u19s. Same as last year. Also apparently we were unlucky on the night. I'm not too sure I'd be too worried about it. Hopefully the lads can use their experience on this squad this year to kick on and nail down an u20 place next year.

For 1.5 decades at a push.

Wexford are in transition so a spell down in 1b might bw no harm. There will be more retirements next year. Newx year clare, dublin and lesser extent carlow will be good matches. This isnt ideal going into the championship but its important a good performance is given against limerick who were outworked for long periods of that game. Maybe the limerick reserves arent as strong as we thought Slowandshortsighted (UK) - Posts: 49 - 16/03/2025 02:04:15 2596654 Link 0 |
I'd agree with that. It's an opportunity to catch our breath but it's important we come back up next year rather than get stuck again but two up two down will help. I'd suspect jippo won't be around much longer. Obviously an important player but he's been out more than in the last two years. Same with Mac. Fanning and Dooley? Chin is the only one from that cohort we just can't do without. Morris, Matt, Dee and Mogie are huge losses. I don't see the next lot being as impactful. The lads we're introducing now are our future and I have confidence in them stepping up. Not sure we have another chin anywhere though. Only from 1980 til 1995 really. Other than that it was pretty even for the late 90s, then we have been on top this millennium. Before 1980 we only lost 1 championship game to Offaly I think, in 1969. Not sure about pre WW2 but I could look it up.

Antrim would be a good game as well. And Down and Kildare will be no pushovers if we are missing many of our best players.

I'd say if Jippo comes back this year he will play for another couple. Don't write him off. Chin could play another couple also if he wanted to.

Best part of 2 decades tbh. They owned us in the 80's, we beat them in 96 and 97 but they came out on top in 94, 95, 98, 99 and '00.

Offaly pipped us in 98 but hammered us in 99 and 2000

True but we shouldve won in 98. And while they did beat us well enough in 99 and 00, we did beat them pretty well in 96, and held on in the 97 LHSF to beat them by a goal. That's surely pretty even, you wouldn't say they had our number as such. I don't think we lost a championship game to them since then either.

I'm fairly sure the beat us in a close game in 2012. Jack guineys championship debut of I'm not mistaken. We beat them in 03, 04, 06 and don't remembered playing them another time in that decade Doylerwex (Wexford) - Posts: 3462 - 16/03/2025 19:44:34 2596787 Link 0 |
I think the point still stands. Pre 80s and post 00 still have to be considered and I've rarely seen us Lose to Offaly in all my time following Wexford.
