Tomsmith here from Cavan

I have read the proposed rule changes and I am of the opinion that if these were to implemented you would need at least two referees in each game, but back to the proposals I feel the best of them are
No1 3 Forwards to be up front at all times
No2 No pass back to the Keeper
No3 Kickout to travel out 45 yeards
No4 Two points for a long range shot out 40 yard from Goal.
and
No5 lastly keep them two Boyous that ruined our game away from Gaa games

If these five are not already included get them included for the weekend

Mine are (in ranked order):
Tap 'n' go
Three Up
Restricted Goalie
Two pts score (in lieu of arc, a broken line at the top of the D, 33 metres, might be easier to police).

There's a question for the esteemed TomSmith. Is that 3 forwards up or 3 players up ?

Adjusting the forward mark but for me I would have got rid of the forward mark altogether.

No back pass to the keeper is my favourite.
4 points for a goal is my least favourite as I think some lucky goals will be overrewarded and it might also be counterproductive, as no one will want to concede a four-pointer.

No back pass to the goalie, for sure.

I like the new scoring system the most. This will change how teams defend. It should encourage less zonal and more man marking

The 3 up and no back pass to the goalie will do the most to improve the game.

Why do you think that a GAA ref is inferior to any other ref?

Junior rugby and soccer refs manage away every weekend with offside, but the poor GAA ref can't be relieved upon to see if 6 lads are standing the right side of a white line when he looks at them.

Tomsmith here

I am afraid having watched the final on Saturday evening I am not in favour with many of the rules
Here is the worst proposals
No1 4 yes Four points for a Goal
No2 50 m advancement for speaking to the Referee ough it easly couldl bread a group of little Hitlers
N03 3 players up all the time.... Two up would do

1 or 2 tweaks all that is needed. Game fine IMO but a couple of subtle changes welcome surely.
So many idiots out there who don't know what they want to watch and don't understand the game or what is happening tactically. These are the same people who compare football to ice hockey / hurling.

You're getting hard to please Tom. You don't agree with them two boyos who ruined it, and now you don't agree with the buckos trying to fix the spectacle/spectre that the two boys created.

I've watched a few responses from a few different people online and locally.

I know a few "trainers" of the game for example who are blasting the rule changes and chuckling to myself as to why. Because suddenly their way of "training" could be coming to an end, spoofers who basically make a few quid every year on the back of training teams to do the sum total of nadda apart from play the most cynical brand of football known to man.

Its dawning on a few that they might actually need to train a team to play football, its also dawning on some players that they might need to play a bit, run a bit more, that defenders might have to defend rather than the safety in numbers.

Having said that not all the changes are needed I feel.

No need for 4 points for a goal.
A 45 or free kicked from the ground should still be 1 point, reserve the 2 points for a score from play.
The bringing the ball up 50m is a bit of an overkill in all honesty.

All the rest of the rules are fine with me and definitely worth a go, some will have a more positive effect than others such as the 3 up top all the time and the solo and go option, still not sure what fhe point is of retaining the mark in its current guise though.

The 50 mt rule will cut out a lot of dissent and messing that goes on, has to be enforced though, once fellas get used to being penalised it will work.
4 points for a goal is too severe, other than that I think it's a massive improvement and has serious potential to rejuvenate Gaelic football.

I don't get the logic behind the 2 men in at throw in.
It's a huge advantage to the team who's other midfielder stands behind the referee as he's free for the ball to be broken to him.

50m advance for back chat to referees is in place because of far too much abuse by players towards officials. If players could actually show respect this wouldnt be in place

A 4-pointer however, is only worth 2 red flags.
I wonder if streamlining the scoring back to '3 and 1' would be better?:

Goal - 3 pts
Over from at/outside the 40m arc - 1 pt
Over from inside the arc, ONLY after 45-20 kick - 1 pt
Over from inside the arc, without 45-20 - 0 pts (wide).

I'm underwhelmed with the retained long series of hand passing - perhaps only a 'total of two' should be allowed in any sequence of unbroken possession, after the 2nd, a 'forward' kick pass should be required.
