Overtime Showdown

What do you think of this proposal to replace penalty shootouts?

My view is that it is broadly a good idea. There is a skill in penalty taking but it's not a core one of the game. This proposal allows all the skills of the game to be used and could be very exciting. But, I would have some concerns:

1. Is there any time limit on how long this extra period could last? What happens if teams are unable to score for an elongated period. It could take ages for two scores to happen and then an indefinite period for the golden score. Television coverage, for example, couldn't really cope with an indefinite period. Similarly, what would happen with an autumnal evening match, heading into darkness and no floodlights.

2. What happens if the weather conditions are such that they advantage one direction of play. So, say there's a strong wind blowing in one direction. Then whichever team wins the toss to play in that direction has a big advantage. A way to deal with that would be to switch ends after the first score but then one team would still have an advantage for the golden score.

3. A minor one would be to lose the 'overtime' name. Too American!

Will players get time and a half for their overtime? Will they get triple time if the overtime is on a bank holiday? Hopefully the GPA can ballot their union members to discuss the players rights if overtime is approved. Lads might have trains to catch.

If Team B scores a "2-pointer" after Team A scored a "point", does Team B win, or we go to the "golden score"? I think B wins as they "more than matched.

It's the worst idea I have heard yet

The team the scores the first one will then do every cynical foul in the book to stop the return score.
An idea that worked well for Dublin in an all Ireland once.

Sorry, just a mix up there on my part....

"What do you think of...." was just a cut/paste from CeachtPeile above (instead of me hitting 'reply'.

So, my 2nd paragraph was just a question - as FRC proposed, does the higher overtime scoring team win the game?

To your point, I see an initial goal as being particularly problematic - the scoring team would then board up.
Maybe a work around is an initial "golden goal" wins it - the 2nd play is only after a point or 2-pointer.

Your cynical foul point would just lead to the opposition getting closer to the score they need.

It's a stupid idea with a silly name… The only way it should be considered is if after 2 periods of ET in a replay with the sides still level… Getting rid of replays was a stupid idea… no need for all this rushing through of games but I guess the GAA are more interested in concerts taking place in Croke park than Gaelic games come August….!!!!

Think most real GAA people are more interested in club games taking place come August tbh.

In the old days 28 counties in each code could get their club games moving in August with inter county for four teams still going. Not sure why that has changed in recent times. Zero reason why clubs knocked out in June or July can't have county finals taking place in September

Yeah but with the whole gaa calender taking place in one year you cant afford to do that as county winning teams will then have to wait weeks without games in the club provincal championship as they have to wait for the other 4 teams to finish there championship

We started our club championships in July. As did many other counties. There's absolutely no way you could get 16 games played by September, unless you had midweek games every week. Then you would be putting players welfare at serious risk.
In the old days players were released back to their clubs for club championship games between intercounty games. But now there are way too many intercounty games for that to happen.

A practise in place in some American cities is after extra time the game restarts immediately and the team who goes two SCORES ahead wins.

I wasn't attacking your particular suggestion

I think the entire concept is rubbish.

Just copy that

This is not a new concept in the GAA… I remember it used years ago .. It's similar to the "Golden Goal" rule FIFA brought in but it lasted on a couple of years… It is not a rule I like…!

It's a bit similar Foreverblue but the Golden Goal was extra time with next score the winner. I liked it because there's more skill involved in a golden goal than penalties and tired teams can make mistakes. Overtime showdown gives the team that's conceded a chance to equalise. If there's a strong wind in extra time it could be an advantage to the team with wind at their back, and it mightn't! With the 2 point arc, 4 point goal and the 'Overtime showdown' they're not taking too much influence from US sports entertaining a television audience. I'd prefer to see more skills and more hitting, referees letting games flow. 2025 should be an interesting season.

I like that actually - although I could see the period being prolonged from time to time. So, a "golden goal" is always an instant winner?

I like the "golden goal' - soccer also watered it down to a "silver goal' for a while (following a goal, plays continued to the end of that 15 mins period, as opposed to all 30 mins) - I prefer the drama of 'golden' sudden death.
