You're right about the long vowels anyway. My young lad will be one in a few weeks. Him saying "oh no" is absolutely comical. He sounds like Larry o gorman

All the midlands accents sound flat and depressed to me, so slow and monotone. Tipperary accent is gas if they all talk like Matty McGrath!

No one is losing sleep if Irish accents are slowly changing Everything changes over time anyway, the accents we have today are not the accents people had hundreds of years ago And I dont see any change, at least in Donegal. Accents do help with the ladies and fellas though so I agree on the point..will never understand how people think our (donegal) accent is "sexy"...lol eddieSize5Balls (Donegal) - Posts: 87 - 28/08/2024 19:14:37 2567429 Link 0 |

Flat maybe but not sure that They are monotone though but harsh on us midlanders

Yeah I was a bit harsh and generalising too much, Dessie Dolan on commentary springs to my mind when I think of the midlands accent, it's a massive area though, I'm sure there are many variations.

I don't hear that around here but what we have lost is lot of words, phrases and sayings that used to be commonplace. One difference i notice here between the older and younger generation is that Donegal people always went UP to Dublin, UP to Clones,UP to Sligo etc.Now some people are staeting to go DOWN to those places probably influenced by outsiders whose direction depends on where a place is on the map page.

Yes, you could include parts of Kildare and Carlow as well. Anyone why accents vary so much?

Donegal people wouldn't be going "up" to Dublin though? It's like Galway people I know who say how's all "down" In Mayo…Mayo is up. I know plenty here in south Mayo who also say "are ya going down to Belmullet" ??? Again up to Belmullet. Are you going down to the game in Ennis? Which would be correct. You wouldn't say up to Ennis or Cork. yew_tree (Mayo) - Posts: 11407 - 31/08/2024 07:45:47 2567750 Link 0 |
That's good. I must be young so! The only places I'd say down to from here are Waterford and Cork!

I worked in Somerset in England and it sounds very like Wexford which geographically also makes sense

I love the uniqueness of all our accents and hope they continue but honestly believe they are merging, blending and diminishing.

With the exception of a few counties, sadly accents are on the wane, what is catching on is younger people are talking much faster and rolling their words, some TV presenters speak ridiculously fast that camouflages their accent, as for our culture it may not have disappeared completely but it is certainly diluted almost beyond recognition.
