His speech yesterday was much better than the effort he did after the hurling final.. but I think he showed Galway very little gratitude for their efforts all year and at the end of the day only lost by one point… Maybe he just got caught up in the occasion… On another note Harris our leader looked totally dismayed at the whole thing… I wonder did he ever see a game before…?

It will all be hot air from jarlath unless equal funding is given to counties on a per population basis." Which counties get more relative to others on a per population basis? Leitrim? Carlow? Not being smart but Im genuinely not sure what you mean by that?

Replying To LottoPlus: "Joe (Not John Connolly) was Captain not the president of the GAA. Do Galway folks not wash Jerseys, line pitches, Cut the grass, make tea etc. He is president of the GAA not Armagh GAA. He should be hanging his head in shame. Galway supporters and the team (who probably did not care anyway what he said) deserved better from him. If Galway had won I would say the speech would have been a lot less muted. He has let himself down and ranks as low as John Horan who used to say "We" when he was on about Dublin. GAA Presidents needs to be neutral. He wasnt." I think you you have misinterpreted his speech.. I'm from Monaghan and I thought it was an excellent and a very emotional speech. As regards the "This is for you" statements, they were aimed at all GAA people across the country who are active in their clubs or parents of underage players who contribute in spades too just by making sure they attend training and games etc. This is what it all means when your county wins an All Ireland. If Galway had to win, do you think it would have been a totally different speech ? of course it wouldn't, the same applies to them. When a team wins a final, they get all the plaudits, the losers get the "hard luck, try again" statement, that's sport. As for Burns being neurtral, get a grip, his son was after winning an All Ireland, of course he's not going to be neurtral. The man was in tears at the end for christs sakes. You can't knock him for showing that emotion. I remember in the early 90's, the then president, Peter Quinn, presenting SAM to Down, Donegal, Derry and Down captains, 4 years in a row. I remember a documentatry a few years later and he was interviewed saying it was a dream to present the Sam Maguire to Ulster teams on the 4 years of this term.

But he needs to be professional enough to be neutral. He insulted a lot of Galway grass roots people with his comments. He needs to clarify as he is loosing face. A lot of Galway folks I spoke too were very annoyed but dont want to say because they feel it is sour grapes which it is not. Galway Footballers are very Gracious supporters.

Replying To ballydalane: "I thought it was an self indulgent speech by Burns. He was certainly giving it as an Armagh man, not as GAA president.
Listing out all the volunteers who make the GAA tick every day and then saying "this is for YOU!"
Why, were all the previous All-Irelands not for them? Why is this All-Ireland in particular for them?
And all the GAA volunteers from Galway who were no doubt devastated by the result, I'm sure they appreciated it that an Armagh captain lifting the Sam Maguire was in fact "for them"." He was talking about the final as a whole, not just the presentation of the cup.
It's scary the amount of empty heads on here that need it spelled out for them.

We have very strong Galway connections in our family. My father was from Galway. I war at the game yesterday and I was supporting Galway. I thought it was a magnificent speech directed at all volunteers the length and breadth of the country. What part of "the GAA is where we ALL belong" did you not hear. I heard it loud and clear. Jarlath Burns has demonstrated that he is a President for everyone . In my opinion he embraced everyone and insulted no one.

1980 that speech won't be beaten, even as a neutral the emotion of that delivery gave me goosebumps.
For Galway people present that day it must have been an occasion they thought they would never see in their lifetime. The West certainly was Awake on that September evening.

Even still, it's good to see some emotion there, he's an armagh man and has a son on the team. The armagh captain droned on a bit too long but there was a bit of character in his speech too and again I'd take that over someone with multiple all Ireland medals spending 10 minutes starting every sentence with "aaah, id like to thank.....". Sooooo boring

No need for Burns to be making speeches at all. Present the trophy to the winning teams and step aside.

How in God's name did anyone take that up as being aimed at Armagh and a slight against Galway. It was clear he was on about the whole organisation. Anyone who thought otherwise needs to seriously consider going back to baby infants and starting education all over again from scratch.

I don't recall Nicky Brennan being very neutral in his speeches...
He was talking about everyone in the country who lines pitches, makes tea etc. it wasn't just Armagh people, it was meant for all people from every county.
Similarly his comments about welcoming immigrants wasn't meant for Clare people last week.

President of the GAA is not a gravy train. The GAA match your salary from your job you put on hold to take the role. So for Jarlath Burns he'll be receiving a salary equivalent to his principle salary.
He will get expenses to travel around the country on the rubber chicken dinner circuit but I don't think anyone would complain about those expenses given the aforementioned rubber chicken and effort in takes.
