Surprised Davy did not want another year. Aussie now 29 and can make an impact if assigned a role and sticks to it. Hope Shefflin is not getting considered to replace Davy. Canuck (Waterford) - Posts: 2866 - 03/07/2024 18:00:47 2556792 Link 0 |
Davy to Galway and Henry to Waterford would make more geographical sense, but maybe Waterford should stay within their own county. Likewise, Galway have fared better with a local manager.

Why didn't he want another year? Was it really his choice? I might sound cynical, but maybe he and Waterford came to a 'mutual' agreement about their parting. Galway bound? Cockney_Cat (UK) - Posts: 2654 - 03/07/2024 21:09:05 2556811 Link 1 |
It would be a great move for Shefflin from a travelling/family point of view. Why don't you want him to replace Davy? Cockney_Cat (UK) - Posts: 2654 - 03/07/2024 21:22:56 2556816 Link 0 |
I doubt he'd take a Galway team in transition. Not really the way Davy works.

These things do not happen in isolation. I'm sure that Davy will take up the Galway job. Backdoor approaches made to him, and when both sides had it nailed won, Davy announces that he is leaving Waterford. Traveling my a**e, sure he went down farther to Wexford and for longer. When the deal was done, Galway tell Henry that it is time to move aside, or Henry smelled the rat and moved on of his own volition. Sure, many Galwegians were lepping that Davy wasn't installed 3 years ago. They're going to get their wish now. foreveryoung (USA) - Posts: 2094 - 03/07/2024 22:54:31 2556834 Link 0 |

Not trying to put the boot in to one of hurlings greatest ever, but at this particular juncture I don't see why any Liam Mccarthy county would want Henry. Going back to club management or perhaps a lower tier county would be his next move imo, with the goal of taking another shot at managing an all Ireland County down the line. Great players don't necessarily make great managers. At times with Galway Henry looked like a deer in the head lights. Outside managers don't work in hurling and the proof is there. Davy had success in Clare and people playing that down is just incorrect. Lohan has not done that yet anyway and until not worthy to be compared with Davy. Maybe Clare could do with Davy back. They havnt had a lot of success since he left, in fairness. Freethinker (Wicklow) - Posts: 1261 - 06/07/2024 15:43:10 2557217 Link 1 |
The risks are greater for Shefflin than they are for Waterford. In his next appointment he needs to have a measurable degree of success. Getting Waterford to finish in the top 3 in Munster would meet that threshold but it is not a given. I think he would be a great appointment for ye and I think he probably would get ye into the top 3. As for Davy, I dont think he would be a good appointment for us. I expect he is very interested and will jump at the opportunity especially since a Galway team even in the throes of a rebuild ought to be in with a shout of winning Leinster. Talks of Derek back with Daragh Sullivan. Who knows at this stage. A surge of players is what is important. Enough to stay competitive I believe but a bit short on winning pedigree.

Hear we go again with the manager parade. Davy leaves Waterford once Sheflin resigns in Galway. Not that I ever wanted him in Waterford. Who do they think they are fooling? He has already been told he is considered for the Galway position if available. He could not be available if in Waterford still. But lots of native managers also leave their counties in a worse place than they found them too. I agree generally with your point, I believe that a manager should come from within the county, but John O Mahony did great work with galway and Leitrim, Micko with Laois and kildare, bond with offaly,, and even the bauld Davy won major trophies with Wexford and Waterford (first time round), as well as L. I. T. No matter how good Davy does people will always take pot shots at him because he rubs people up the wrong way, but I've no doubt if we appointed him in 22 rather than Henry we would have achieved more the last 3 years. I thought it was strange that Davy announced he's leaving and Aussies straight back in.

Davy is an excellent manager for getting the most out of good players. And devising systems for them that suit them to make them more successful. His record at player development and bringing young players through is pretty poor though. Overall I think he has been great for the game of hurling as a whole though. The success of outside managers at All-Ireland level is dismal. I can speak for my own county. What we won was with Waterford men in charge. 48,59,92,2016 We even won two junior football All-Irelands with our own John Jackson in charge . I don't take pot shots at Davy. He is a great Clare man. Proved it in the field of play and as a manager. However he is not a Waterford man or a Galway man. What does that mean ? Like Cahill when a better offer came along and as door closed behind them they could not give a dam about Waterford hurling or Galway when that happens. They are driven by their own ego to look good. We will have to listen to the rhetoric from Davy how he loves them Waterford players while he will shout insults at them next year if in charge of Galway.
