Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh RIP

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

"I saw a few Sligo people at Mass in Gardiner Street this morning and the omens seem to be good for them. The priest was wearing the same colours as the Sligo jersey. 40 yards out on the Hogan Stand side of the field, Ciarán Whelan goes on a rampage, and it's a goal. So much for religion!"

"Pat Fox has it on his hurl and is motoring well now, but here comes Joe Rabbitte hot on his tail. I've seen it all now, a Rabbitte chasing a Fox around Croke Park."

"He grabs the sliothar. He's on the 50. He's on the 40. He's on the 30. He's on the ground."

"Colin Corkery on the 45 lets it go with the right boot. It's over the bar. This man shouldn't be playing football. He's made an almost Lazarus-like recovery from a heart condition. Lazarus was a great man, but he couldn't kick points like Colin Corkery."

Some more gems. GAA & RTE better have a great segment ready for the weekend.

He grabs the sliothar, he's on the 50, he's on the 40, he's on the 30, - he's on the ground.

He made the broadcasting of our games beyond perfection.

He made perfection beyond description.

RIP oh great one.

Replying To foreveryoung:  "RIP to the great man. I met him on a number of occasions at the Annual Asian Gaelic Games (AGGs), when I was living on that side of the world. I often heard non-native English speakers, such as Koreans, Vietnamese, or Chinese say that his was the easiest accent ever to understand, that they understood him 100% when he spoke. Michael is not just a legend in Ireland but all around the world."
Very well said Forever and its guys likw you that understand.

His autobiography is worth a read, From Dún Síon to Croke Park."
It is. A friend gave me it as a Xmas present 20 odd years ago. One of the best autobiographies I ever read.

I liked the bit where he wrote about playing a round of golf with elite hurlers. They would always be very humble when asked about hurling, but the same man would be unashamedly boastful about playing a good shot in golf :)

Met him at a couple of gala dinners in Tyrone, a true gent and not a noise during his speeches. The voice of summer. even if a match was on TV I loved going out to the car seat down and listening to this man on Sundays. RIP.

Rip Mícheál, there was nothing like listening to Mícheál on a hot Sunday afternoon in July or September while having the tv on in the background. Hopefully a statue will be erected for this Legend soon.

He had the ability to turn a bad game into a good one with his commentary…. I think even the great man would struggle to make anything out of some of the current dross…:

RIP to Mícheál, we will never see his likes again. GAA royalty and such a dignified man.
He gave life to every match he ever commentated on, but he never said a player was s***e, he focused on the positive - the good play.
The last king of the GAA and for me one of the upper tiers in Croke Park should be named in his memory.

I remember meeting him in Croke Park in 1995 with people pulling out of him left right and centre but he was finishing his conversation with a nobody like me first. Little things like that you never forget. RIP to a great man. I hope the GAA mark his legacy with something named after him or a statue. It is the least he deserves

I'd like to see them name Scholarship after him. And maybe let a different broadcasting student help in every GAA match from now on. R.I.P.
