Will The Gaa Game Ever Recover To What It Was Like

Tomsmith here

I just wonder with all the new proposals being made will the Gaa game ever recover to what our beautiful game was like before those two Boyous ( ough dont let me start ) got at it . Fifteen behind the ball , quick break, push up, off the shoulder ect ect. The Gaa game was beautiful to watch before it was tampered with .
I think that if we could revert to what it was like, when a fullback was a fullback and afullforward played on the edge of the square ect.
I long for it to return

Probably not. The emphasis nowadays in on athleticism and coaching different skills. Yes, the outstanding fullback, majestic in the small square - enter at your own risk. Centre backs spraying good ball to the wings. Midfielders - Mick
O'Connel etc? What can I say. Corner and wing forwards who terrorised defenders. The full forward - The Bomber springs to mind. Mind you, those games that stick out in the memory were scarce. There was an awful lot of sh one t games too. Many more than the standout ones. So, maybe we are in a better place ??

I don't know. Free fests, stop-start, I think it was better maybe in the noughties or tens to be honest.
But maybe you mean from a Limerick view and I can see why!

These new rule changes sound positive for football especially three players having to be in your own half which might make football more attractive than prsently.
Hurling is still drawing big crowds and drawing large TV viewership figures , its a pity a few more counties dont break through ( after Limerick win this year !)

Flaker I can not understand where you are coming from when you say this is a whings,
Flaker Tomsmith nearly always posts good quality intelligent posts.
The great Mrs T states that some of you are away down in the lower ledge in relation to quality

How far back? Back to drop kicking the ball 60 yards? Back to driving in Holy Mary balls? Back to player's not fit to walk? Back to what exactly?

Hurling in general doesn't draw large crowds. The Munster hurling championship draws large crowds. So too do the quarter-finals, semi-finals and final of the All-Ireland series. These games are very much the exception to the rule. This year's Leinster hurling final also drew a good crowd. That's as far as it goes. Games in the Leinster hurling championship seldom draw crowds of more than10,000. The vast bulk of the matches in the Leinster hurling championship draw crowds of less than 10,000. Some of those games pull crowds of 2,500 and 3,000. The crowds at Division One matches very seldom come near 10,000. The National Hurling League final this year between Kilkenny and Clare was a pathetic 12,000. Those competitions I have referred to are the elite competitions. The crowds at league matches in Divisions 2A, 2B, 3A and 3B vary between small to non existent. The same is true of the Lory Meaghar, Nickey Rackard, Christy Ring and Joe McDonagh Cups. The Lory Meaghar, Nickey Rackard and Christy Ring finals this year were played in front of a minuscule "crowd" in Croker this year. The crowd for the three finals combined was smaller than you'd get at the Dublin Cumann na mBunscol finals. The truth is that people don't go to see the vast bulk of inter county hurling games in both league and championship. A lot of them are played in front not much more than one man and his dog.

Tomsmith, it's not often I agree with a Cavan man but you're spot on here. I recall growing up in an era where the skills of the game were taught. Now its all athleticism, diet plans and drinking bans. Very seldom do we see lads playing with freedom, all part of a system.

No it's not. The players of today are every bit as skillul if not more skilful as the players of years gone by.

And all the football crowds have been massive this year?

Disagree big time here. You have lads on county panels now based on what km they clock up on the daily. Those fellas wouldn't have got a sniff in bygone years.

Some lads must still listen to matches on the wireless. Can't move with the times or accept change. Sad.
