Replying To legendzxix:  "Laois can probably claim to be the greatest McDonagh champions as they went on to make the All-Ireland quarter-finals. Offaly are flying high off the back of the back of the U20 success. It seems teed up to be a good final. Both have a high enough profile."
Both have played in dozens of Leinster Championships and should be in it every year. Both have won Leinsters and AIs.

Replying To Doylerwex:  "So you want 4 from the group of 6 and 3 from the groups of 10 ?

It's too complicated anyway.

Let the lower division of the league serve as a qualifier for provincial championship.

Revert provincial back to knockout.

Provincial champions into aisf

Runner up into aiqf

Everyone else in all Ireland preliminary groups."
No, I'd have 4 of 6 / 3 of 5 / 3 of 5 (bottom 2 out in each group, 10 of 16 advance).

im going to nail my mast as to who will win.Offaly for me have a slight edge if only pschologically.Ill be honest I was disappointed with Laois in Mullingar even if it was only half their starters and easily our best game.Offaly for me with a better bench to win by 2

Joe Dooleys comments are ridiculous

The Joe McDonagh Cup is the best thing that ever happened that middle tier of counties

Offaly losing the run of themselves with a bit of underage success now demanding to be back in Leinster!

2019 they couldn't even stay in the McDonagh

Regular competitive games at your own level with a chance of silverware and promotion if good enough…

Same as every other sport in the world

Would the Offaly county board do away with grades and just put all the club hurling teams into one competition?!

Something important doesn't seem to occur to Dooley when he says all teams should be competing in their province in the way they do for minor and U20.

In Leinster, both the minor and U20 hurling championships are run on a Tier 1 and Tier 2 basis. The 'weaker' counties in Tier 2 first play off between themselves to try earn the right to play against Tier 1 counties from the preliminary quarter-final stage onwards. Sound familiar?

It means that the Tier 2 levels at minor and U20 are essentially de facto Joe McDonagh Cups for those levels. The only significant difference is that there's no silverware for the Tier 2 teams that emerge from them.

And surely it's better for the Tier 2 teams at senior level to have a cup to realistically aim for, rather than not have one, as in the minor and U20 grades?

100% correct

Our under 20s didn't have it all their own way against Meath this year but blitzed Ulster champs and Carlow to come out of Tier 2

It didn't go their way in Tier 1 but coming out having played games at their own level better than having taken 2 or 3 trimmings from Tier 1 teams

Yes to every1 above but in fairness dooley was defending the joe mac teams from the fela that said joe mac winners and runners shouldn't qualify for liam ,and I hope to jazuz one of them prove him right

Not quite. The suggestion was that only the Joe McDonagh winners would go through to the Liam McCarty stages, but not the Joe McDonagh runners-up.

As it stands, you could lose three times in the McDonagh Cup, but still go through to play one of the Tier 1 counties. That's what happened Kerry two years ago. They lost two group games and then lost the final to Antrim, but they still got to play Wexford (third-placed team in Leinster that year) in an All-Ireland preliminary quarter-final that year.

Meanwhile, teams already gone from the championship at that stage included Dublin (who'd lost just twice, at a higher level) and Waterford (who'd also lost three times - same as Kerry - but against a much higher level of opposition).

Am not saying I agree with the suggestion that only the McDonagh Cup winners should go through, but I do acknowledge that the idea has some merit.

They also didn't come straight back up from the Christy Ring either. When it was becoming likely Offaly were going to start dropping down there was a lot of talk in the media trying to justify why they shouldn't be relegated etc

It's similar with the Offaly footballers. Made a Leinster semi final and suddenly, it seems, they were too good to the Tailteann Cup.

There's zero justification for the McDonagh runners up entering the Liam McCarthy series. It's beyond farcical that it was initially allowed and now continues.

I'd agree that losing mc donagh definitely isn't good playing the 3rd team in Munster or Leinster..winners aswell im sure would prefer to enjoy winning promotion to McCarthy the following year.this is a game im finding hard to call..Offaly really on a high at the moment but Laois are probably the more seasoned team..they seemed to have got a buy in now from all players and results are showing the proof..the young Offaly players are a joy to watch and I'd safely say they are nearly the 2nd team of every county in hurling..I'll say Offaly to win just because I think croke park might suit them slightly better..

It was a rare occasion that the Tier 2 counties got a concession. It was the carrot that was dangled for the old Leinster qualifier group counties to accept the McDonagh Cup. I enjoyed the visit of Wexford Tralee two years ago despite the result. Tier 2 counties need an opportunity to play the top tier counties. It might become less important with the new 1B format have two of the top 9 in the same division as five of the next group. Antrim, Westmeath, Laois, Carlow and Offaly will enjoy good competition.

Have to agree even though we are down to play the losers and its a handy pass to the quater finals but all its doing is increasing the chances of us picking up injuries.Everyone knows whos going to win before it starts same goes for cork and the winners of joe mac.

I actually hope this is just trolling.

Either way, as another Wexford man, let me quickly disassociate myself from those comments, and assure people from Laois, Offaly, and other Joe McDonagh Cup counties that Tiger1's views don't represent Wexford people as a whole, and certainly don't reflect the views of our players either.

One thing we know with absolute certainty about Wexford hurling is that we can never take anything for granted, no matter who we're playing, and either Laois or Offaly will be getting every respect ahead of Saturday week.

Not saying we dont respect them just that neither team is good enough to beat Wexford or Cork simple as.

Correct about the JMcD runners up. The winners should play in the Liam McCarthy championship, the losers just want to get back to club championships after a few weeks break

I'm sure Dublin had a similar attitude in 2019....

Did you think Antrim this year, and Westmeath last year, weren't 'good enough to beat Wexford'?
