Replying To ORIELMAN85:  "Ah it's pointless trying to debate with a lad that "doesn't know what he doesn't know". I don't give his nonsensical posts any credence any longer. Of course you and I know there are many stakeholders in the GAA but the most important when it comes to games are the players. And players want to play games in well organised competition. We now have that with the Sam and Tailteann Cup format. Ask Derry when jeopardy starts. Looking forward to some great games this weekend."
Some GAA people/followers seem to want a games playing organisation to be playing as few games as possible.

Appeared simliar to the group stages low. With more on the line one would expect more maybe bigger crowds will turn up for the Quarter final especially from those who has home advantage.

Yes thinking that, id doubt any of the games went about the 1500 mark.

This weekend be a good barometer of the interest with the quarter finals, though still wouldnt expect bigger than 2,500 at any of the game, Kildare v Laois possibly get the biggest crowd given counties and closeness travel wise.

Not sure what the attendance for the semi double header was last year in Croke Park, could do well to top 10-12k in few weeks.

If i hear the word jeopardy once more, its not TV gameshow we want, if championship structure was exactly that then the term would never be used as concept of championship should be knockout football meaning every game counts,do or die, which generates interest and helps engage more supporters to attend

A "championship" is a contest for the position of champion in a sport or game. It can be organised in any form.

Was talking to one of your 'stakeholders' ( most normal people call them players ) at the weekend and he told me it was ( is ) sole destroying to play games in half empty grounds with no atmosphere…. and hopes the GAA powers dispense with the current set up… This guy is playing over 10 years for his county and has never hit a ball in the Taltainn Cup by the way…. Only after this weekend will the Championship start for most teams…. The rest of the games were only warm up matches hence the paltry attendance figures…!

So you are happy with system that allows team lose 3 championship games in a row the opportunity to still have a chance of winning all ireland?

Think micky harte himself questioned it after armagh defeat, from attendances to date it's clear most supporters aren't that interested in all these group games.

Would you consider a team that possibly wins Sam maguire after losing 3 championship games a true champion? Put on same level as the great Dublin team or others that had to win every game for the privilege?

For instance, derry go on and win Sam now beating Dublin in quarter(first defeat of summer), hardly a fair system.

Every team can have a bad day but surely think should be 2 strikes and your out!

Correct.
All GAA Championships conclude with knock out rounds anyway.
I see the Leinster Chair suggesting a round Robin format for the football Provincials.
A bit pointless in Leinster and Munster!

Of course it can be organised in any form, nobody is arguing that point…but most sports organisations organise their tournaments to maximise interest for supporters who pay in thus generating revenue….. When supporters turn their back on something and vote with their feet you know your tournament structures are wrong…unless you're totally thick…

No team that loses 3 Sam Maguire or Tailteann Cup games can with either Championship. In the case of Tailteann they are already gone and in Sam they will be gone by Sunday.

Derry have lost 3 championship games in a row… and so have Cavan and Westmeath… and don't start your old guff that Provincials aren't Championship… I'm sure your "stakeholders" thought they were playing in a championship game… 3 defeats and still have a chance to progress… bonkers stuff

Some people don't seem to understand that the Provincials are SEPARATE competitions.

Derry Lost to Donegal in the Ulster Championship, have since lost to both Galway and Derry and can still progress in the All Ireland Series.

Same case for the likes of Cavan, Westmeath, Meath, Roscommon and Clare.

With the current system, Westmeath and Roscommon could progress in series with draws this weekend, so both record in previous 4 games would be (W = 0) (L =3) and (D = 1), hardly rewarding championship form. Hardly a coincidence that attendances are down either?

League and championship are different animals, hence their structure shouldnt be similar but the more tweaks the championship gets it becomes more league another form of a league.

They are not separate. The qualification route for All Ireland is through provincials. Even down to whether you are in it or not.

They provide seeding for the All Ireland series group stage so for now they aren't.

The qualification route to AI is NFL and Provincials.
Do keep up!

Yea,yea, yea. Like the Premiership and the Champions League are the same competition. You win a Cup for the Provincial Championships and a different Cup for the All Ireland or Tailteann.

Well said Barney…. some of these delusional posters haven't got a clue about what a Championship game is…. More interested in calling players "stakeholders"
… whatever all that's about…?

Like I already stated, a Championship can take any form. Or is it a case you guys are so into the FA Cup that Championships have be a mirror image.

Interesting your comparison to football, given the structure of the champions league now, more group games driven by making more income, surely you havnt just stumbled onto the reason for the GAA All Ireland series structuring!!:-)

True Champions are those who perform well throughout the competition, winning every game under the pressure, where every match has consequence in that you need to win to progress, in this case there can be no questioning the last team standing as worthy victors

The change to qualifiers was referred to as backdoor system, what is current one? backdoor, chimney and attic system?

A Munster Hurling team could lose 3 games and still win the AI.
I don't hear anyone wanting that changed.
A Club in Roscommon only got 1 point in the group, then went on to win the title 2 years ago.
Groups are for qualifying from.
