Can only determine if a point was scored… not goals as it was presumed 2 umpires could surly see if a ball had gone behind the goal line… Might have to rethink that one too…!!!

Blink of an eye stuff, wouldnt blame the umpires to be honest if I was an umpire in hurling I'd be behind the goal too!! How does hawkeye not pick that up? Such a cruel way to lose an AI final TobeaRossie (Roscommon) - Posts: 158 - 22/01/2024 09:31:41 2521460 Link 0 |
Hawkeye only works for points. Still the umpire's job to make a call about goals.

I get that you'd be inclined to move out of the way, for fear you might be hit if standing right beside the post. I get too that you'd be inclined to move to the back of the net, since that's the safest place in that regard. But surely a better move would be to move a few yards along the line - out of the "danger zone" but still with a view straight along the line so it's easier to tell if the ball crosses it or not. it was poor work by the umpires to be honest - These are intercounty umpires who do get the training with their referee from croke park. I would expect better. There was a similar incident (for a point) in the Wexford Senior hurling final this year (the game was on TG4) and the umpire spotted it. one thing I noticed about him was that he was a young lad not more than 20 i'd guess. I remember noticing that before the incident happened. I'm not ageist but maybe thats part of the issue. Some of the umpires yesterday seemed to be of senior years lets say!!

Yeah but you won't satisfy anyone with that either as they will still say that he was too far away to see it. There is another logic to standing behind and that is if it goes just above the bar at that speed its hard to react - now its Croke park and they have Hawkeeye but I guess 99% of the games they umpire they wouldn't, so its a natural reaction. Looking at it in real time and from the second TV angle there is no way anyone could tell - it was only the third outfield TV angle, slowed down and blown up that people reacted to, zinny (Wexford) - Posts: 1900 - 22/01/2024 13:44:05 2521538 Link 0 |
Brings back memories of 2021. If hawkeye is able to judge if a ball is fully over the bar why can't it decide if a ball has crossed the line? Would they not be the same sensors involved?

Here's a piece from when Hawkeye was introduced in 2013 which includes a bit from a Croke Park spokesman explaining why it's not used to detect goals: https://www.balls.ie/gaa/the-gaas-new-hawkeye-technology-explained-80278 link Seems it basically comes down to the number of extra cameras that would be needed, and the associated costs. I've done some umpiring, one should always be watching the goal Barrowsider (Carlow) - Posts: 1661 - 22/01/2024 15:35:18 2521564 Link 0 |
It wouldn't take long for the ref to go to the sideline and look at a moniter. Afew years back Galway were awarded a point at half time, and rightly so. It's not rocket science.

I believe that was a hawk eye call/error. Hawk eye does not adjuicate on goals. We certainly do not want the pitch side monitor on sidelines. Its making a balls of soccer Jack L (None) - Posts: 3141 - 22/01/2024 22:32:57 2521646 Link 0 |
They were - its just from the angle they were watching it at.

The cost alone of opening Croke Park yesterday and having hawkeeye - was it covered by the attendance? were the semi finals etc covered? As tough as it can seem, it all needs to be put in perspective. zinny (Wexford) - Posts: 1900 - 23/01/2024 02:43:51 2521659 Link 0 |
Neither of them were in line with the goal line so they had no chance of seeing if the ball was over the line… terrible officiating…

In the end of it all a mistake regarding the ball over the line was made. I actually don't attach any blame in the situation. I know some will point to the positioning of both umpires but they were reacting to where the O Loighlin player was shooting from and were getting ready to adjudicate on a point in my view and its a natural move to go behind the goals rather than have one at the goalpost. Even if one was at the goal post, the angle of view he would have had may not have made a goal conclusive either as the Thomas' players legs seemed to cover the view of tye ball too. A mistake was made, it's rare in fairness. Limerick suffered a few years ago when a line ball went off a KK defender and out for a 65. None of the officials on the day noticed it and KK got to an All Irl as a result. I also do noit think that a monitor on the goals or referees going to a monitor for a more conclusive view is the way to go. And tv monitors don't always get it right either. Difficult to take when you are on the receiving end however. carlowman (Carlow) - Posts: 1849 - 23/01/2024 10:06:12 2521691 Link 0 |
