Interesting chat with Rory jacob on the Wexford hurling podcast regarding the future of Wexford Hurling. He makes a few worrying points about such quality of players coming in Peters from primary school is getting lower every year and thinks this is widespread throughout the county . I would love to see the more money being pumped into coaching structures now rather than the centre of excellence and Wexford Park. Players are all that matter and if we arent producing them in the county we could end up in big trouble.

Think the best hurlers always went to Peters but now they seem to be going to different schools too that play wider range of sports . Cbs have made good strides in last few years good cousel are nt as cometitive either if yo loked at it closer too. Schools getting better spread of pkayes the more schools competitve the better ideal you would want 1 or 2 of them competing hard at top level alright . With being involved in the coaching up there surely he can improve them substantially over the 6years they are in the school .

The big change was the Departments change in enrolment procedure for secondary schools. Schools have to prioritise siblings first, then local feeder national schools, then the wider area. In that order. In a lottery type system if there are more applicants than places. It means a lad from a national school further away can't be offered a place if a lad from one of the assigned feeder schools wants one. As a result Enniscorthy played Senior A Leinster this year, and CBS in Wexford are making big strides. Bunclody and Gorey are doing pretty well also, and even rural secondary schools like Adamstown and Ramsgrange are improving well too. I'm not too worried about Peters, and as you say it's up to themselves to try to improve the lads they have by coaching them better.

I think his point is a huge part of a childs development in hurling is from 6-13 before they enter secondary school . I think we need to look at primary and secondary schools in a big way and what they can do to work with our clubs. Then after that is getting a good management team in place at u17 and u20 when they do reach that age so they can bring their s and c and hurling to the next level again. We need to look at what the likes of Limerick, Offaly, Kilkenny and Cork are doing at underage at the minute they see what can we implement here in Wexford.

I get depressed about the future when I hear initiatives like 365 being linked to schools.are.just not working. I thought we were doing the work underage now.I thought I heard Daragh Egan say last year that Tipp were copying our underage documents and plans. I also thought the schools s&c program was really kicking off now and those players will be doing the summer s&c in COE starting now I think.
I have a feeling we can do all this and more and it's just not enough to keep up with other counties.
I also feel the best players don't necessarily come through these programs, the most skilled young hurlers in the primary schools are the ones out the back garden pucking off the wall and controlling it etc. every chance they get. Out with their Ma or Da or siblings putting in the time. That's where skills are learned not off your secondary school Teacher.
Do kids in Wexford love it enough or want it enough to put in the hours. Do we promote self practice enough. Do we have skills challenges of skills feiles or blitzes instead of competitive games. I don't think we do

How many hours per week do club players at u8-u12 play hurling and for how many months per year?
I know ours training for 1 hour twice per week from April -October, one session hurling, one football so that what but the weekend one may be replaced by a game. That's about 28-30 weeks. For about 8 weeks some attend hurling 365 and another 8 weeks for football before school - one day per week.

Replying To Viking66: "Think you are right there. Kilkenny have more lads over 6 foot who can hurl than Limerick do. Think Limerick have 5 or 6 lads who aren't 6 foot. It's the teamwork that sets Limerick apart though. And their speed, of thought and pace. And the ability to make in game tactical changes on the line quickly. The late 90s/early 00s Cork style might be a better one for us to model our gameplan on though for the near future, as looking forwards as to who is likely to come through in the next few years we are going to have a pretty small but fast and skilful set of forwards, especially inside. Something like the set up we had in the League this year." You peaked my interest about the height of the Limerick hurling team. I had a quick look. As far as I can make out (and there were a few heights missing from the subs profile on the wiki page), there's 5 on the 26 man panel less than 6 foot. Sean Finn - 5 ft, 10 inches. Darragh O'Donovan - 5ft, 11inches. Cian Lynch - 5ft, 11 inches. Peter Casey - 5ft, 11 inches. Graeme Mulcahy - 5ft, 10 inches.

I think we run ourselves down quite a bit let me tell you there is.no real gra or passion for hurling here.
You get the odd young fella who's father is from the country or whatever and then the odd Dub but it's not passion like lads in Kilkenny
We go from September to end of June. 1 hurling a week and 1 football but alternating matches on weekends so in essence one week you have 2 days hurling and the other week you have 2 days of football.
The standards are very poor. I expected more as they've Chris Crummey etc. But say 8 or 9 year olds you'd only be picking 3 or 4 that are hurlers. Football is so much higher standard.

We do 2 training sessions a week at our club u8s to u12s, 2 football 1 week then 2 hurling the next depending on the upcoming game at u12 and we do an hour drills followed by half hour game so an hour and half after the clocks go back, but I know for a fact there are many clubs who don't. They only do 1 a week. It's not enough. But at the same time many clubs are struggling to get enough mentors to put the time in. Sadly people are too busy to volunteer for anything that they're not getting paid for these days.

It's so much harder to master the hurling skills . The best ones are also best footballers soccer and rugby players. They have the Carrot of professionalism snd dreams of making a career in 2 of them and an easy sell to a young chap and his parents. I ve heard parents of you.g chaps actually sayi g we may have to move to England to further the lads career that was few years back now they have league of Ireland on the doorstep kennedy Cup and leinster rugby acadamies another big carrot to these boys especially in the years where they should be improving the skills of hurling they spend with these squads and teams . Until we are at top table of hurling we ll struggle to sell hurling above the other 2 football will always be 2nd best I m afraid in wexford but hurling extremists would rather see them play other 2 than choose football . we are losing some of the ones with most potential to these sports and very little we can do about it . All we can do is wait and if their dreams fail we pick it up for them again and give them new ones of all irelands and leinsters

Disappointing end to the year. You can never say what would have happened because we were only 3 down with 50+ minutes on the clock, and were level when Rory was sent off despite not hurling at all up until that point. But anyway, its done. We get shafted repeatedly by the GAA and don't tell me if Clare were hosting the Feile and the match was fixed for Nowlan Park they would have turned up. Heels would have dug in and we need to start sticking up for ourselves as a county because lets face it nobody has our back. Unfortunately, I fear Limerick would have wiped us so we could have dodged a bullet for a young team with new players being blooded. I think from afar it looks like a solid first year for Rossy, was worried after the Antrim game it might be 2023 all over re relegation but we bounced back. He has blooded new players and lets face it Wexford need to look to be strong for 2-3 years time when this current Limerick team dominance ends. We now need players like Darragh Carley, Tucker, Eoin Whelan, Cillian Byrne (who I think is better than Cian), etc to take this thing and drive it on. Some of them in Australia will be back next year I think. But I do fear for where we are at in general, our U20's this seemed like a complete shambles from the get go despite many of them playing in Leinster Final last year? I hope the Co. Board have a real hard look at what happened. I always hate it when I see our supporters pointing to individual results. "We beat Kilkenny in minor", we did but what was at stake and who is in the final this weekend? Yes it is good to beat them and is progress but we also lost to Dublin and Galway at that age group? I am not criticising players here, good and bad results happen at underage but Wexford at all levels are woefully inconsistent. I would say lots of children in Wexford pick up a hurl for training and then not again until the next training. You need to practice a game like hurling every day to become good at it let alone great at it. Talk about schools hurling is complete BS in my opinion, you do way more hurling in your club than school and the school is just filler, if your clubs are good enough and your club championship is good enough then your schools will be a product of it and benefit from it.

I agree the love for practising the game needs to come from the parents and children need to practise the skills at home too. I think kids lack of interest at the minute because we dont give them great opportunity to see their Wexford heroes on tv and a lot of kids dont go to Wexford games because the parents dont have the interest. They see soccer and rugby heroes on tv every week and are straight out in the garden playing those sports once the match is over .

School far more important for developing county players. Clubs give schools the players- the top bracket players are developed further here as standard higher due to the best of the best from clubs being on these teams. Peters going to B championship a disaster.
