As his clubman I have seen more of Paul than most and he is an "All Star" but it does not bother me that he never received an actual award. We know his brilliance. The All Stars are the team of the championship and through no fault of his own the furthest Longford progressed in his time was a fourth round qualifier defeat. You can't expect to get an All Star ahead of players who have played really well on the biggest days - the All Ireland semi finals and final. Enda Smith must surely be an outlier. What annoys me more is that it's Brendan Barden who never received an All Star, for some reason the GAA decided to have no awards between what were the Cuchullain awards (Brendan has one of these) and the All Stars as we know them today

You're right in saying an all star team is supposed to be about the best players over the course of the season but that's obviously not the case in the GAA. There is key criteria required to be selected for a GAA All Star: 1 How far your county travelled in the All Ireland championship (the further the better your chances), then 2. your individual performances matter. So yes it's all about how your team fares in the championship first and foremost. The fact that only nine non quarter finalists have been chosen for All Stars since 2002 tells you all you need to know. I was shocked on Friday night when Roscommon got one for the poor All Ireland championship they had but I wouldn't begrudge Enda Smith as he is an exceptional footballer. He's in the 1 %. All Stars breakdown 2023-2010, info obtained from Twitter. Summer, thanks for your time and effort, but this type of quantitative data is HS (and I don't mean Hoganstand). Please come back with some qualitative data, for in the end of the day, as CiarraiMick points out above the awards are not based on how the team performs, but on how individuals performed in their individual positions (a few exceptions have been made over the years). Obviously, the more exposure and games should be to the benefit of players. However, not always, a la Stephen O'Brien in 2019. If he have had been injured for the final, let's say, he'd probably have won an award but his performance let him down. Please try to get over a Roscommon man winning one, with Meath nowhere even near the hind teat. foreveryoung (USA) - Posts: 2095 - 20/11/2023 17:48:43 2513908 Link 2 |
That's someone else's work, not mine. It proves the point that the awards are based on how teams perform first of all (All Ireland champions will generally get the most, one or two more than the All Ireland finalists and the rest are divided between the semi finalists and quarter finalists. Enda Smith is one of the small number of players that has bucked the trend. It doesn't bother me in the slightest that Roscommon are celebrating an All Star and I'm aware that Meath are far off the pace.

An average team doesn't finish 3rd in Div 1, beat Mayo in MacHale Park and held Dublin to 1-11 to a draw in Croke Park. Furthermore twice in the last 6 years Roscommon beat your own Galway by a bit to spare in Connacht final in Pearse Stadium. Enda Smith is one of number of decent players they have. From the Daly brothers,Brian Stack, Ciaran, Diarmuid Murtagh etc. Drax_the_destroyer (UK) - Posts: 241 - 21/11/2023 20:56:22 2514099 Link 1 |
