That should matter. If an individual player stands out he should get it.

Last time I checked it was an individual award not a team award so from that point of view Smith is deserving. He's a very good player, ticks a lot of boxes in terms of what you would want in a modern day Gaelic footballer.

Enda Smith is an absolutely class player and been one of the top players in the country for years. Maybe not as highly rated outside of Connacht as within. Delighted for the man.

This is a charade I've never agreed with. The players that got the awards definitely deserve them for their dominance and skill and commitment throughout the year. However in the vast majority of cases it's those players who are in teams that progress to latter part of the championship that get these awards. There have been outstanding players from Div 3 & 4 counties over the years that have been completely overlooked as they might get 2 or 3 championship games. (and several Div 1&2 counties also) It seems an elite competition to me and the media are all over it with all of its razmatazz. Id like to level the playing field or scrap it. Its not about who your team beats ,its about how the player played and Tbf Ends Smith was outstanding this year. The all stars is supposed to be the best players over the year and Smith fully deserved his award imo.I think the selectors got it fairly right tbh.I though Shane Ryan unlucky (statistic wise he was best)but cant begrudge Ckuxton either.I though Sean O Shea a little lucky but overall i think its a good selection.

It's individual not team…

Cluxton wasn't fully deserved at all. Ryan and Beggan were both considerably better over the year. cavanman47 (Cavan) - Posts: 5193 - 18/11/2023 11:16:42 2513602 Link 2 |
Div 1, beat Mayo, drew with Dublin, weren't stuck in the Tailteann. Enda was our man of the match in around 90% of games in 2023. It's an individual award and well deserved. To have someone from the faded aristocracy of Meath questioning his selection is beyond belief. Seanfanbocht (Roscommon) - Posts: 1954 - 18/11/2023 12:08:42 2513612 Link 7 |
Enda Smith was excellent all year, man of the match in two matches, influential in all their games, why begrudge him an All Star Claretandblue (Westmeath) - Posts: 1916 - 18/11/2023 12:28:20 2513616 Link 1 |
I thought McEvoy would have got young player of the year. Doherty may be young but he is fairly experienced, I think that was his 4th year. It was McEvoy's first season, 18 months ago he was at school. PattyONeill (Derry) - Posts: 246 - 18/11/2023 15:15:24 2513627 Link 0 |
Also how did Lynch not get nominated? He essentially won Derry the Ulster championship with his saves and scored several good points. Maybe it was because of the goal against Clare. PattyONeill (Derry) - Posts: 246 - 18/11/2023 15:18:46 2513628 Link 1 |
lack of research or wasn't paying much attention by a Meath poster, nothing new on here over the years.

It hasn't been a level playing final for the past twenty years. Nor is it an individual award, it is a team award for individuals with the top county teams. The original idea was to reward the best individual players in their position regardless of what team you played for. Now it has morphed into a selection confined to the all ireland semi finalists and finalist with an occassional player selected outside these teams. They even introduced a way to pick players in different positions so they didn't have to leave players they wanted out. You can be an outstanding player carrying your native county team singlehandedly and not be considered.

Delighted that Enda Smith got an award. And if that pi$$es you off, then I'm even more delighted.

If Enda Smith ticks most of the boxes, as suggested by you, are you seriously thinking he will be leaving Roscommon to join Kilmacud Crokes?

Stephen Cluxton fully deserved his selection. Most influential player on Dublin team. Conceded only one goal this year. Dublin would not have won the All-Ireland without him this year. All of his kick outs in the All Ireland final found a colleague this year. He scored two valuable points from frees in the final. The winning of the All-Ireland plus his attributes gives weighting to his selection this year. This is his seventh All Star award, he should have won more than this number.

Very happy with Derry's four awards each of which I think is well deserved. Delighted for Enda Smith, a great footballer who has had a fantastic year. BánAgusDearg (Derry) - Posts: 3 - 18/11/2023 20:27:48 2513666 Link 2 |
