Replying To WanPintWin: "I'd agree with you on TJ's selection. I don't think he was one of the best 6 forwards in the championship this year based on performances. His scoring contribution from play wasn't very impressive at 2-12 in 8 games. 2-06 of that came against Antrim and Westmeath. He was scoreless from play in the two biggest matches. He's obviously still an excellent free-taker and had some great moments creating scores for others, but I feel he got the award more on reputation this year." Interesting comment Wan.

Replying To TerribleFootwork: "There different types of players Butler generally picks up the biggest threat in the opposition in terms of speed, TK been the perfect example, Nash usually ends up in a somewhat free role as everyone plays a 2 man FF line and is hugely effective at it. Based on 2023 championship Butler would shade over Nash and no doubt its close, prior performance shouldn't dicate anyway, perfect example Sean Finn is the best defender in the country but for 2022 all stars he didn't deserve it over the 3 lads picked who were Butler, Nash and I can't remember off hand if Lawlor or Morrissey got full back." Fair points the only other point i'd raise is that Butler took a bit of a roasting in the AI final.

A selection choice that I disagreed with is that of TJ Reid over Tony Kelly which is something that frequently happens with great players who miss out at the start of their career but then pick up one late. I agree that he's an extraordinary player but I think he had a relatively quiet season. He grabbed one amazing ball in the All Ireland but that was really it for me. I know that TK didn't hit the heights in the semi final but he had some exceptional games prior to that and had a much more consistent season over the year.
Overall, KK have done very well to get 5 awards given that they lost to Wexford, won the Leinster final with an absolute fluke, last gasp goal and were very well beaten in both the league and All Ireland finals. The seven that were won by Limerick players represent the absolute minimum that they could have won. I accept that Quaid and Murphy was a tight call and the Clare save tipped in in favor of Murphy but that said, Nicky had a fantastic Munster campaign whereas Murphy conceded a lot of goals in the Leinster championship.
The biggest injustice in the selection through is Mikey Butler over Barry Nash which was again based on the semifinal. Butler ran into a lot of trouble in the final whereas Nash was consistency right throughout the championship.
In fact the primary reason that Limerick won the Munster championship at all is because of the play of our full back line and goalie which was the best performing unit in the Limerick team all year. Yet they only get one All Star from that segment of the team.
Looking ahead, I'm thinking that KK are looking very exposed and I'd expect Galway to take them in the Leinster championship next year. They are losing veterans to retirement and they don't seem to have replacements of the same quality particularly in the forwards.

Kilkenny get 5 All-Stars. They win Leinster, by a point, with a last second goal. They loose to Limerick by 9 in the Final. The exact same score as The Galway Limerick Semi Final. Galway get 1 All Star. The whole thing has been a joke for years. Just a night out for WAGS to don a fancy frock.

There's a big clean up going on and a big influx of under 20 all Ireland winners
You don't get bad kilkenny teams.
Having said that, I'd say leinster could be wide open.

They're nearly just reserved for finalists these days.
I remember a time when a good league could get you an all star.

All-stars are individual awards, not team awards. It goes to show that KK is a team with 5-6 exceptional hurlers (Mullen included even though he didn't get an award..,didn't deserve one) in certain positions, whereas Galway can be seen as a more balanced 15 overall, with exceptional hurlers in less positions: Whelan, Daithi Burke, Joseph Cooney-neither of the latter deserved an award this year, but are great players.
Look, one could make this argument about the football team too, where Derry got the same number as Kerry. However in those four INDIVIDUAL positions those Derry players were the best this year, IMO.
Admittedly, TJ seems to have gotten a soft one this year. Butler/Nash was 50-50 and Butler got it; no great complaints here. The other 3 KK players were nailed on.

Tell me, what's different about a goal in the last second of play, and a goal scored at any other time in the game?

Saw Nicky Quaid at the allstars at his table last night and couldn't help but feel he's been so hard done by in his amount of all stars to date. In 2018 he provided the pivotal moment of the season against Cork but didn't get an all star in favour of Murphy again and this year Murphy gets in again and I'd say a lot of it is to do with the save he pulled of in the semis.
Murphy might be the slightly better shot stopper but for me Quaid operates at a different level in all other aspects. He controls the game and starts the plays, and sets the tempo, he is probably the most crucial player in Limercks successes through the years. If we had Eoin Murphy in goal for us would we have won four in a row? Is Murphy capable of controlling a game and making the right decisions in the same ways as Quaid does. I have green tinted glasses but for me it's not even close, Quaid is in a totally different league and unfortunately what he has done will probably only be recognised by many when he eventually retires. Surely even the KK diehards with an expert appreciation for what it takes to win an all Ireland can see that, if maybe they don't want to admit to it.

The All Star selectors choose the players in each position. There will always be a debate about the 15 players every year.

I agree with everything you say but I think Quaid is a casualty of Limericks success they are so dominant in most matches that the keeper is overlooked if you look back at the kilkenny glory years their keeper suffered the same way
