Ballyhale are a class apart from any other club in hurling or football in ,my view. To win 6 All Ireland club titles from 2007 to 2023 and 9 in total, that is off the charts stuff. Ballyhale have also produced some of the greatest hurlers in the history of the game. Past hurler (None) - Posts: 798 - 17/12/2023 13:18:41 2517153 Link 0 |
I think that's a very specious comparison as Limerick didn't get put to to the pin of their collar in their four in a row success by a team their equal nor were they ever taken to extra time or anyway near it. Last night the two teams were very close in ability the whole game through and therefore "the lottery" of penalties is not an unfair way to finish up, as even a replay might not have easily decided things. It could have gone either way at full time or end of extra time. The better penalty takers won in the end and I don't think you can make a case to say that's "unfair"? Its nothing to do with being "unfair." Life's unfair. i think its a bad way to deicide an exciting competition. Others disagree. Not seen anyone refer to "grab all association" among GAA people regarding this either. Meanwhile, great start by the Antrim men against OLG but probably needed a bigger gap. OLG look razor sharp when moving forward. Hopefully it doesn't turn out to be one sided second half. BarneyGrant (Dublin) - Posts: 3102 - 17/12/2023 14:12:55 2517165 Link 0 |

Where did I say it was "unfair"?

They were taken to extra time by Clare.

What do Cushendall have to do to get a free ? cuchulainn35 (Armagh) - Posts: 1685 - 17/12/2023 14:28:36 2517170 Link 1 |
Corofin have to be given credit too tho, they won an all Ireland in 98 and obviously have had great success recently too, and have produced great footballers consistently. Crossmaglen also. Galway9801 (Galway) - Posts: 1942 - 17/12/2023 14:57:47 2517174 Link 1 |
Anyone got a wide count for cushrndall for the last 20 minutes of the game, they missed about 8 or 9 score able points I'd say. Galway9801 (Galway) - Posts: 1942 - 17/12/2023 15:03:54 2517178 Link 1 |
Cushendall will be really hurting tonight. They were the better team for most of the game and should have won by a few points. The luck wasn't with them at all and they had several chances to bury the game. Ulsterman (Antrim) - Posts: 9783 - 17/12/2023 15:53:10 2517186 Link 0 |
Ballyhale? :)

I agree they had the measure of OLG but their loss had nothing to do with luck, they had several very good chances to tack on points and blew them. That's no ones fault but their own. Galway9801 (Galway) - Posts: 1942 - 17/12/2023 16:17:34 2517192 Link 2 |
They put up a great fight. Thought they might have been overrun in second half but they dug in. Bad shooting nothing to do with luck.. OLG took their chances more efficiently as they did against Na Fianna who were similarly wasteful at crucial stage. Been a great series so far and final should be a good one. Neither team would have been on most people's short list at start of year. That said, St; Thomas record in Galway, which along with Kilkenny is by far the toughest of any county to win, made a mockery of the chances they were given, BarneyGrant (Dublin) - Posts: 3102 - 17/12/2023 16:33:12 2517197 Link 2 |
You're implying that penalties were unfair or looked like that! Anyways, main point is your Limerick comparison is a false one.

Yes, everyone is entitled to their opinion but the alternatives to penalty shootouts are limited. I don't think bringing amateur players back for a replay over Christmas or N Year (if that's what others are suggesting) is fair to players or supporters. Summer might be different of course except schedules get in the way. What's your solution?

I never implied that penalties were "unfair", you had no right to quote me as saying so. I said, penalties are 'mostly a lottery'. That has nothing to do with fairness. Cockney_Cat (UK) - Posts: 2654 - 17/12/2023 17:16:22 2517205 Link 0 |
Ach! What can I say! Started the game like steam train and probably cost ourselves a few easy points instead of trying to play through them for goals, old saying…take your points and the goals will come. Second half we played great in patches and defensively a lot tighter. Thought Paddy Burke and Eoin Campbell both outstanding, would grace any team in Ireland. Had a 5 minute spell in the 2nd half where our shooting was awful. The three lads are normally so deadly as well. Never been prouder coming from the Dall of the lads. We had a belief that we could have got to the final this year especially after nearly beating Dunloy last year. I truly think this was a great chance of winning it especially with ballygunnar out. Could go through all the chances we had, but The Gaels had some as well. Think this is about the 3rd or 4th semi we've been beaten by a point. Tough to take. Good luck to the Gaels. exref (Antrim) - Posts: 64 - 17/12/2023 17:57:37 2517209 Link 1 |
I too dislike the penalty shoot out.I would have prefered a replay.Play extra time no problem but then a replay imo.If i was either supporter last night id have been dreading penalties. Its a real tough way to lose.Armagh have gone out of the football championshio two years running on penalties. Not for me.

They could have fitted in a replay after Christmas. Football semi weekend or the one after.

Another advantage of 'the lottery penalty shootout' over 'the lottery one point win loss draw' is that there's likely less room for referees to meddle in results with the shootout. Pope_Benedict (Galway) - Posts: 3869 - 17/12/2023 21:00:28 2517233 Link 1 |
