I grew up in the city, steelstown is my club. When I was growing up GAA was not really pushed in the city. Only about 7 or 8 years ago did all the schools in the city get a decicated GAA coach. Number have been rising with the recent success and more money going into the city. the city is soccer mad alright. Nothing comes close, the rugby team doesnt even have a stand ffs. I wouldnt say its a catholic protestant thing as the city is well over 80% catholic Whestofthewest (Clare) - Posts: 177 - 16/10/2023 11:33:49 2508601 Link 0 |

Same issue in Dundalk regrding soccer. After Dundalk Gaels got relegated from the senior championship, none of the 5 clubs in Dundalk will be playing senior championship next year. 4 Intermediate and 1 Junior. In Drogheda it's nearly the same problem, of the 5 clubs only 1 will be senior next year (they stayed up after winning q relegation play off too) 1 Intermediate and 3 junior. I think that's an issue country wide. Urban clubs are struggling in many towns around.

Indeed, there is a big falloff of players in most clubs from juvenile to adult. Also some of the bigger clubs hoover up players from smaller clubs so there can be an imbalance. Still good problems to have, by contrast many rural areas outside of provincial urban areas are beginning to see fall off in numbers, this tracks the pressure manny rural schools are having in terms of pupils, there is a demographic cliff emerging.

Was there not a hurling club, or a hurling team at least, in 'Skea? Going back a good few years now, Seem to recall meeting a few of them. Great admiration for people who keep hurling going in unfavourable places.

Not the problem in leitrim. Only one club in Carrick-on-Shannon (St. Marys). Look set to dominate leitrim football they've reached 3 of the last 4 county finals winning one. They are also dominating underage and have 30-40 players at each age group. To make it even harder for the rest of the county Roscommonese kids are crossing the bridge in carrick to play with them.

Laois has around 37 football "first teams". CmonAymonow (Laois) - Posts: 160 - 19/10/2023 16:16:24 2509277 Link 0 |
16 teams "Senior" out of 37. Ridiculous!! Seanfanbocht (Roscommon) - Posts: 1944 - 19/10/2023 16:19:11 2509278 Link 0 |
Out of interest what is the hurling first team split. Would Laois be regarded as more of a hurling county than football? Same as above the split in Offaly would be interesting. Is it more of a hurling or football county? drumalee11 (USA) - Posts: 328 - 19/10/2023 16:50:21 2509290 Link 0 |
I think Clare have 31, 12 senior, 11 first teams intermediate, 7 first teams junior and Moy is a first team in the lower grades of football also.

From my research Waterford have 29 but open to correction on that. drumalee11 (USA) - Posts: 328 - 19/10/2023 16:58:54 2509296 Link 0 |
Think you should re read the post. There are likely over 80 football teams in Laois with 2nd and 3rd teams.

Town clubs all over have more numbers underage usually. But seem to suffer a higher dropout rate afterwards in many places. Probably more alternative things to do with your time than in the country. Or maybe a little less pride of place. Love your username BTW!

There are 12 senior,12 intermediate & about 24 Junior teams in Limerick , 48 in total with that been 38 clubs allowing for b teams but this gives a false picture. OpenStand (Limerick) - Posts: 717 - 20/10/2023 10:04:05 2509363 Link 2 |
