Be interesting to know how many 1st team football clubs there are per county. Would be an indicator as to which counties are over performing or under performing. Obviously Dublin and Cork are way ahead of every other county. drumalee11 (USA) - Posts: 328 - 10/10/2023 17:16:45 2507771 Link 0 |
Roscommon 28. Also 3 Hurling only Clubs. Perhaps a better indication would be how many adult teams in total play in the various Championships? Seanfanbocht (Roscommon) - Posts: 1944 - 11/10/2023 11:24:25 2507841 Link 0 |

Monaghan 29 football clubs, 7 hurling clubs. Dublin has 180 clubs, Cork 250 (open to correction on this). Monaghansclown (Monaghan) - Posts: 187 - 11/10/2023 11:42:17 2507848 Link 0 |
21 in Longford and only 3 clubs play hurling. Ourselves (Clonguish), Longford Slashers and Edgeworthstown. There were 24 clubs in the county up until a few years ago. Shroid Slashers, very small club on the outskirts of Longford town, disbanded and so too did Forgney outside Ballymahon. Ardagh and Moydow, two clubs in the same parish came together to form one club. Talking to people from various clubs around the county and there are others who could struggle to survive on their own in the next ten years or so. Cashel, Legan, Killashee, Ballymore, Mullinalaghta are all struggling with numbers, even a town the size of Ballymahon is getting it tight with numbers. it's a bleak outlook in Longford liosbreac6265 (Longford) - Posts: 254 - 11/10/2023 11:58:11 2507851 Link 0 |
Only football clubs as its an indicator as to how many clubs an inter county football team has to chose from. A separate thread could be made on how many hurling clubs per county; as it would be equally as interesting. drumalee11 (USA) - Posts: 328 - 11/10/2023 12:05:23 2507853 Link 1 |
Mightn't be a great measurement of under performance or over performance as my own county Cavan have 40 clubs but they are probably better suited to around 35 or less given the population of the county.; but I just think its an interesting topic to see how each county is performing in relation to how many clubs they have. Does be interesting to see the split between hurling and football clubs in the dual counties also. Recently took a look at Clare for example they seem to have even enough split between football and hurling clubs with maybe a few more hurling. But the larger population bases are to the east of the county (excluding Ennis) where hurling is more popular. Open to correction on this though. drumalee11 (USA) - Posts: 328 - 11/10/2023 12:12:07 2507855 Link 0 |

23 football clubs in leitrim. We lost St Osnits a few years ago and I'd suspect we'll lose another 3-4 in the next 5 years Leitrimforliam (Leitrim) - Posts: 325 - 11/10/2023 12:35:19 2507861 Link 0 |
We only have 4 football only clubs as far as I know. Sars, Vols, Joes, and Mary's in Wexford Town. Although many of their players hurl with the Harriers and Clonard. Viking66 (Wexford) - Posts: 13783 - 11/10/2023 12:38:18 2507864 Link 0 |
What would the split be. As in how many clubs are there from senior, intermediate, to junior for both codes. drumalee11 (USA) - Posts: 328 - 11/10/2023 14:00:56 2507891 Link 0 |
Nearly all the clubs in Wexford are dual clubs, and there isn't much of a difference between the overall number of teams playing hurling and football. In both codes there are 12 teams in each of the Senior, Intermediate, Intermediate A, Junior, and Junior A grades. Junior B is organised on a district basis firstly, with a District final in all 4 districts, followed by QFs involving the top 2 from each district. Winner of the overall Junior B title gets promoted to Junior A. There are 49 clubs in total, though I think Clonee only field ladies teams these days.

It wouldn't be too hectic over in Leitrim either.... apparently 70% of the primary school population (boys) is within the catchment area of 9 clubs (out of 24) with 1 of those clubs taking up nearly 20% (very likely Carrick On-Shannon). It's hard to see how some rural clubs will be able to field teams in the future and will ultimately have to merge.

Derry have around 30 or 31. The current county team come from around 10 of those clubs. My local club hasn't had a player who has played for Derry in a men's championship game in almost 50 years I think. PattyONeill (Derry) - Posts: 246 - 11/10/2023 20:57:59 2507954 Link 0 |
Drumalee over in USA I know Cavan have 40 Longford around 22 I think Leitrim 23 or 24 Fermanagh 20 Meath in the region of 50-60 Mayo around 45 Galway something similar to Mayo Tomsmith here Drumalee I dont know whether you put any thought into axing this question or not. The great Mrs T points out that the fair Ladies also play GAA and most are a separate unit within the GAA. She also points out that a lot of are only Clubs by name and do little to contribute to County Cavan senior team progress. Take Cavan Gaels for instance a very progressive Club in Cavan but unfortunately other Clubs in the County have not shone to the same level. Because it might come as a surprise to you but not everyone is interested in hurling.
