There is room for all sports in the country. Most GAA supporters follow the international soccer and rugby teams, along with their club/ county sides.

That isnt really true though. Played by lot more than that but very top tier was closed off to many for ages. World cup is dominated by same sides but thats the same in all sports to be fair. Whipping boys made up of transfers from south africa??? Stop making things up KillingFields (Limerick) - Posts: 3674 - 24/09/2023 18:30:21 2505458 Link 1 |
I can't help thinking that his description of the Rugby World Cup is very similar to the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship - at best ten decent teams (with only three or four of them having a real chance of actually winning it), and a load of also-rans. All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship doesn't even have the also-rans! So...if the Rugby World Cup can't be taken seriously because of this, then surely it follows that the All-Ireland Championships can't be taken seriously either???? ;) Pikeman96 (Wexford) - Posts: 2621 - 24/09/2023 19:12:58 2505464 Link 2 |
Ireland number one team in Rugby, number 9 team in Cricket. I don't think GAA has had a negative on those sports. Regarding football, I would guess the split of Ireland into N.I and Republic has had a more negative effect, maybe I am wrong. Football badly needs an all island league. We are also top class in Horse racing. Finally over 400 GAA clubs abroad now- that is some achievement. galwayford (Galway) - Posts: 2565 - 24/09/2023 20:19:14 2505478 Link 1 |
Football has an "all Ireland" league. Mayo won it as far as I recall...

Namibias team must be 50 South African. New Zealand is a team full of islanders taken to the mainland private schools, and the island teams are half all blacks that packed it in and transferred back. Sure our own 'wonderful' team is private school boys that had to be juiced with players bought years ago.. what is there 3 or 4 southern hemisphere players on 'our' starting lineup? This rugby World Cup is a sad mix of the English premier league and a pub league. Players brought in from outside the country for each team cause that's the fashion, only really 2 or 3 teams ever capable of winning it and a few whipping boys brought along to make up the numbers. If this is the best rugby has to offer I think the GAA is safe enough Jjoniel79 (Monaghan) - Posts: 175 - 24/09/2023 21:29:19 2505487 Link 3 |

"Namibias team must be 50 South African."??? You lost me after the first sentence. 50 years old? 50 on the panel? 50-50? Nifty-shifty Honda 50? What in the name of God are you trying to say? Me thinks Kavanagh was right when he said: " they flung a ditch in front of my brains!" foreveryoung (USA) - Posts: 2095 - 25/09/2023 03:05:19 2505506 Link 0 |
Care to back any of your points with proof. Theres actually far more new zealanders and new zealand born players on all of the pacific island teams than the other way round. new zealand arent full of islanders who went to schools in new zealand your accusations of drug taking is horrendous and mods should remove the post as thats an outrageous allegation again with no proof. I don't recall ever seeing an Irish team in any sport, perform like the Irish rugby team against Boks. Losing 6 line outs at beginning of game, they took everything South Africans threw at them, and then some. Sexton at 38 is a true warrior, took ferocious hits and gets up without a murmur. They rucked ferociously, evidenced by the amount of turnovers against the World Champions. Rugby is the only sport where Ireland are competitive on world stage, and this particular group have the ability to go the whole way. Singing of Fields of Athenry by 60K fans in Paris, will be a prelude to Irish pride and emotion, as this team progresses…. Hopefully to World Cup glory! Hansen, Aki, Lowe, Gibson Park, not remotely Irish, joke that they can earn a living here and then declare to be Irish. Think Bealham in same category, prob others too. Claretandblue (Westmeath) - Posts: 1916 - 25/09/2023 14:11:34 2505627 Link 3 |
Hansens mother is Irish. she was born in cork All international sports allow players move on residency grounds to play for another country. you have to allow for that with migration the way it is in the world these days Bealham is qualified through having irish grandparents KillingFields (Limerick) - Posts: 3674 - 25/09/2023 15:07:23 2505640 Link 0 |
These are immigration laws ,and if these guys declare as Irish , that's obviously terrific! Applies to every country, even USA has welcomed African marathon runners through residency.Bundee Aki would be welcomed in every Irish house at this time!

Yeh, I love the rugby but I am not comfortable with the amount of non-Irish players that are so important to this team.

Say some of Ireland's top hurlers and footballers all happened to get jobs in Mullingar, and they all moved there to live close to work. Some time later, they decide to declare for Westmeath. Would that be a joke too?

You obviously didn't watch Paul McGraths performance v Roberto Baggio and Italy in the 1994 World Cup in Orlando. Unbelievable team performance to beat the Italians 1-0. I thought Ireland were quite poor v South Africa. If S. Africa had any sort of decent kicker, Ireland were gone. Past hurler (None) - Posts: 806 - 25/09/2023 15:29:20 2505658 Link 1 |
Exactly! Some countries will have more restrictions than others, but the fact is that a person with Irish grandparents can apply for an Irish passport. Ireland has lost enough young people through emigration, so is nice that these guys want to represent Ireland!

Is there too many though and how many would you be comfortable with all sports allow it and happens with all teams. nothing wrong with it KillingFields (Limerick) - Posts: 3674 - 25/09/2023 15:39:31 2505662 Link 1 |
Yes, I was fortunate to attend the game against Italy in 1994, when Giants stadium was turned into an Irish home game. The game in Paris reminded me of that event in 1994,when Irish supporters (mostly Irish Americans)turned it into a home event. Paul McGrath had a superb game against Italy that day,as did Roy Keane and Dennis Irwin ,and that game alongside Saturday's game is etched in my memory. Irish coach Farrell may yet follow Jack Charlton's footsteps. There were the same detractors in 1994 who complained about some Irish players not being really Irish, so not much has changed!
