Mickey Harte Leaves Louth To Become The New Derry Manager

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Deserves a thread of it's own. Big blow to Louth, took on that gig when they were a middle of the road Div 4 team and had them finishing 3rd in Div 2.

Derry hang around to long to find a manager replacement and brining in a manager that has won a number of All Ireland's is a good appointment.

From what ive heard over the years and from what is coming out of derry now is that mickey was never the most egar of managers for a big pay cheque. From what I hear it is a chance to be closer to family, bring a good team on and the most of what i am hearing is give the middle finger to tyrone board for pushing him out

Pushing him out? How long actually was he meant to get?

He had went 13 years without an all Ireland and our system of play had barely changed. Meanwhile year after year we kept losing so many talented players due only to the fact that they were not 'Mickey players'

Also let's not kid ourselves here. I am very close to the right people in both counties and the figures I am hearing are 6 figure. Mickey is putting together a retirement fund and fair play to him for that.

Best of lucky to Mickey. He gave the Wee County three great years.

I'd love that to be true. 2020 was a mess of a year with Covid, Tyrone were playing good football including beating Dublin in a great game in Omagh. A mess of a year. Championship came along later in year and Tyrone didn't perform. Micky asked for another year (and rightly so) and was told where to go. Micky owes Tyrone nothing but Tyrone owe him. Good on you Micky.

Think that's far more like the real reasons.

The coin must be mighty in Derry.... You know something... he might actually win them an All Ireland and no one will care after that how much he cost.

Well that's a big move and he's going to a very good team.

Derry were a whisker away from an AI final and have already won top end gold medals as a team.

It'll be interesting to see what he can bring, obviously a wealth of knowledge and experience but perhaps (just my opinions) his best days are behind him in this modern era, I guess it's all about who he'll bring in as his left and right hand men, he's the old head, he needs fresh ideas and know how to surround him.

Derry are now in Div 1, back to back Ulster Champions and they probably blew their chance of an AI final this year, but there was plenty of scandal in the mix there that surely didnt, butvtgats the past now and 100% they'll be looking at a strong Div 1 push..

They are not far away and I like them, IF Harte and co can bring an extra say 10% and they avoid injuries, they should be looking at an encouraging 2024.

Derry fans.. are you feeling buzzed here?

The Ulster championship was always a cauldron of fire, it has now changed to a burning inferno. Mickey Harte, Kieran MC Geeney, Jim MC Guinness, Vinny Corey......No one will be calling for this Provential Championship to be scrapped. Roll on the summer of 24

He was absolutely within his rights to ask for another year, and the Tyrone county board were also within their rights to look elsewhere.
Their decision worked out brilliantly in fairness, with Tyrone winning the ultimate prize having started the year as outsiders. Very few, if any had Tyrone picked as All-Ireland champions.
I think Mickey will do a very good job in Derry. There's obviously a very talented group there and they'll have learned from the last 2 years. Mickey might be able to give them that extra bit of belief to get over the line. His track record would suggest he can.

Sure Mickey Harte is getting paid and rightly so. But to suggest it's purely for money is not right imo. Surely any man with common sense and drive would jump at the opportunity to jump ship from a louth team (who've reached their ceiling and imo over performed) to a Derry team who are in the top 4 in the country. It wouldn't take an increase in money to convince anyone of this move.

Or working with a better team who can compete for titles.

Be some fairytale for him to go there and win an all Ireland with them. Anything is possible. They have knocked on the door the last two years and weren't far away so he see's this as a chance to push them on. It looked for a long time that O'Rourke was the ideal candidate but he mustn't of wanted it? Does anyone have any reports on this?

Mickey done outstanding work with Louth. I have heard from reliable sources that he came into Louth GAA and set a brand new standard. Got the players all they were entitled to, looked after them like Tyrone GAA looked after their players. This really has gave Louth a good base to work on now. He has laid the foundations so it is up to them to build on it.

I don't think it is. Not traditionally a rich board with lack of attendances and success. Speaking with a friend at a city club steelstown who was treasurer years back and he told me the county board doesnt have that much and doesnt like to spend

This news overshadowed the 30th anniversary of the 1993 final today.

I am not too bothered who is manager as they will be in the latter stages next year regardless. When Gallagher left McGuigan said they they were a group that can manage themselves.

I disagree - I believe Mickey has other reasons for this decision.

Well said Eoin. That's a great description of Ulster football now. I feel sorry for Louth but Mickey appointment is great for Derry, for the Ulster championship and for football as a whole. Mickey Harte is one on the best gaelic football minds ever. Derry were so unlucky this year and should have beaten Kerry and Mickey is a super appointment. Had the pleasure of meeting the man twice. A lovely humble man. I'm really looking forward to next year now. Well done Derry and Donegal. Can't wait!
