2 more young Irish lads going down under in Rob Monahan from Kerry and Matt Duffy from Longford. Both going to Carlton while apparently St Kilda have also offered a contract to another gaelic footballer. The Aussies brought 20 players to trials in Dublin, anyone hear of any names who were involved? Kerry15 (Kerry) - Posts: 972 - 17/08/2023 23:44:25 2501088 Link 0 |

Do you think the Aussie game is better than gaelic football? - I like their tackle rule - ground the ball carrier and win a free - so the ball carrier is incentivised to pass the ball quickly before being tackled and potentially penalised/conceding a free. omahant (USA) - Posts: 2889 - 20/08/2023 16:11:10 2501441 Link 0 |

Just copped this thread was started by a Kerry poster! Please don't mention Mark O'connor! We all know the story! Onion_Sack (Dublin) - Posts: 256 - 20/08/2023 19:28:07 2501485 Link 1 |

Mickey Harte was right I think, Gaelic football is far better game, and GAA ought to have been promoting that rather than the abomination that was compromise rules which appears happily to have been abandoned for good.

Mickey Harte did indeed and better again he stood by his principles about Gaelic football. I don't mind fellows going to Australia and earning a living playing the game but don't like Irish scouts like Clarke and Co doing the dirty work for the Aussies.

The AFL are regularly plundering our brilliant amateur organisation for the talent that unpaid club and county coaches helped develop and harness, at significant time and input cost to themselves, in many modern era cases from U-6 level upwards at club level. The AFL are laughing at us in developing this small but impactful conveyor belt of talent, year after year - trust me, I know this on good authority from folks in Melbourne. Their agents on the ground here and in Australia are not true Gaels, end of. togoutlads (Galway) - Posts: 974 - 21/08/2023 15:47:34 2501635 Link 1 |

Far better by what definition exactly? Promoting gaelic how instead of playig the compromise rules? KillingFields (Limerick) - Posts: 3674 - 21/08/2023 16:11:54 2501642 Link 0 |
small but impactful. There are currently 12 Irish lads in Australia playing. Once, Barry O Connor, is playing VFL and stayed out because his girlfriend is out there on a netball contract, so he made a decision to stay in Australia regardless. Allowing 30 players per inter county squad, that represents 1.25% of the intercounty playing population. We have also seen plenty of lads who come back dont even make county teams, much like a vaunted minor who just doesnt make it at senior level. The "plundering" is being way over hyped, and if a young lad gets an opportunity to go play professional sports in a better climate than here in his late teens/early 20s, then more power to him to give it a go. The GAA dont have exclusive rights over players. Sure they could easily decide to go work in Australia at something else and be lost, like many clubs are currently experiencing. It just happens the job here is in AFL.

It's a better game. GAA should promote it as stand alone game. Which is increasingly popular internationally. More so dare I say than AFL?

Australian Football is boring because of the mark. I have a PS4 game of it and it is insufferable to play and very difficult. PattyONeill (Derry) - Posts: 246 - 22/08/2023 14:58:50 2501788 Link 0 |
The mark does encourage long kick passing and rewards good fielding though.
