I hope it gets a fair trial and that the naysayers done spoil it before it starts at all. Managers do not like change.

Well, the new handpass rule appears to have gotten shown up pretty quickly, as predicted by myself and others.

Paul O'Brien of DCU who also manages Mount Leinster Rangers - so he knows his onions - has claimed on the basis of watching it being trialled among freshers teams that forcing players to throw the ball up from one hand to be handpassed by the other - the irony of that :-) will have all the predictable consequences of slowing the game up.

He is also not fan of having puckouts travel beyond 45 metres. He made the extraordinary proposal that maybe "we should just leave the games alone and let them develop organically."

Leaving well enough alone is something long since lost sight of of in this country where everything has to be turned into an experiment. Even when anyone with half a wit knows exactly where it will lead.

You miss the point of course. Maybe read what he said. I'd imagine he knows more about hurling than you and I although some of us copped onto the obvious flaw that they were trying to replace indetectable and irrelevant levels of "throwing" with a blatant throw!

Did you notice that part? As said before this is another committee brain fart designed - as were some of the football rules - to penalise the best team(s). Nothing more and nothing less.

Your last point is spot on. This handpassing craze began back about 1995, when Cusack's Short Puckouts got the whole thing started. When KK, Tipp and Cork were ruling the roost, winning seventeen out of eighteen All Irelands, there was not a dicky bird about it.

Allowing players to throw the ball 25-40 times per game is acceptable so?

They will be throwing the ball like no tomorrow under this new rule. You have to throw the ball from one hand to the other - (try doing that with Padraig Walsh or Pádraig Hegarty on your case!) = before handpassing it. Presumably someone will hold your stick while everyone stands back and admires your dexterity.

All to replace something that is apparently such a problem that hardly anyone can tell the difference between a handpass and a "throw." Of all the things I've heard lads losing the plot over in Parnell or Thurles or Kilkenny, a handpass be somewhere down along with mooning at the crowd.

The puck out rule was not required and is not necessary.
As for the handpass rule, what else do you expect a manger to say about a rule change that stops him training a team to throw the ball around? You will not find a single Manager who will agree with this rule change but whats best for Hurling cannot be simply dictated by current Managers or current players for that matter.
I hope the Gaa use their own initiative on this one and maybe take on board whats good for the hurling public who have to endure these throw fests and the referees who have to ref them.

If we are to change the rules re handpassing then the Puck Rule simply must be addressed. It was there the whole retention thing started back in the nineties.

One thing at a time oldtour. I would rather they trial one rule change at a time. At least that way we know the direct impact of that rule change and not interfere with by other changes. If the handpass rule gets the go ahead at intercounty then we might see it have an impact on short puck outs aswell. It will not be as easy to hold possession!

To be fair to Dublin if Cormac Costello, Ciaran Kilkenny and Diarmuid Connolly had of chosen hurling instead of football Dublin would of won the All Ireland in hurling in 2013.

They were 3 serious hurlers, Cormac Costello was one of the best underage hurlers in Ireland at the time.
