I'm not a fan of how your idea would mean most or all county finals being played in December....

I'm also not a big fan of the split season either. It trying to get 8 months of inter-county action and 8 months of club action into 6 months each. My main issue with the current calendar is that in the prime playing conditions of July, August and the first half of September we've had 8 inter-county football games and 3 inter-county hurling games. In Kildare we're just starting our club knock out games now. I believe a master fixtures list is the way to go - we can have All Ireland finals at the start of September and county finals at the start of October. brianb (Kildare) - Posts: 350 - 22/09/2023 17:32:09 2505247 Link 2 |
Well, county championships from October to December instead of August to October. When county leagues overlap with intercounty championship, intercounty provincial leagues can overlap with provincial/All-Ireland club championships. Starting the provincial club championships in January would be a change from before. legendzxix (Kerry) - Posts: 8274 - 23/09/2023 08:26:12 2505275 Link 0 |
Fair comment. On balance though, club players could enjoy their summer holidays. The provincial club and All-Ireland club championships would have a January to March time frame.

We had that for a hundred years and it led to 10 + years of discontent (CPA, Fix the Fixtures etc) until we moved from it. Players are happy with the new split seasons, County team Supporters still get to see their teams playing Leagues and Championships, Club Championships have a dedicated full time period to themselves, people who only followed County teams are beginning to discover the local Club scene. Only ones moaning are Breheny, Spillane etc and casual followers who can't get "September so it's All Ireland time" out of their heads. That's fair enough but is there a medium ground as per my previous comment? County leagues run in parallel with intercounty club championships. Intercounty provincial leagues could run in parallel with Provincial & All-Ireland club championships?

when is the off season and how long is that in your proposals?

They should maybe run the championship off on days when there are no rugby or English premiership games, or when the "new Irish" might have some sacrifice they need a pitch for. We don't want to be imposing ourselves on anyone :-) BarneyGrant (Dublin) - Posts: 3102 - 24/09/2023 09:09:05 2505400 Link 1 |
If intercounty provincial leagues were January-ish to March, the off season should be after the county finals in December to mid January, or whatever is agreeable. I don't see the GAA changing from the current split season anytime soon, just sharing my preference. legendzxix (Kerry) - Posts: 8274 - 24/09/2023 11:40:33 2505417 Link 0 |
Thats nowhere near long enough You need to have a proper off season as current set up expects far too much of all too many players at the expense of the majority KillingFields (Limerick) - Posts: 3669 - 24/09/2023 18:32:28 2505462 Link 0 |
Great night Saturday for the sport of Rugby in Ireland. A massive tv audience and massive publicity. It could be a tipping point for the development of Rugby in Ireland. We are the rugby nation now. Along with New Zealand. GAA and Irish football will have to get used to being the minority sports now. galwayford (Galway) - Posts: 2565 - 24/09/2023 20:23:55 2505479 Link 0 |
GAA has club and intercounty. Rugby have club and provincial. Both can coexist.

Have you been to a club rugby game in recent years. Club rugby is dead at this point. The club's are underage crèches and feeders for provincial academies. The parish club structure is what has made the GAA the basis of many communities in Ireland. The rugby model is very different and is focused on an elite professional structure.

No this time money isn't the main factor. The players are.

How many youngsters have given up playing gaelic games because there are no Inter County games in August and September? Seanfanbocht (Roscommon) - Posts: 1944 - 25/09/2023 09:07:59 2505521 Link 1 |
So you don't think children are influenced by what they see on TV? Primary school teachers have already remarked on how the Dublin win went largely under the radar for many children who would be otherwise engaged when final is on as they come back to school after holidays.

Club rugby isnt dead at all and clubs are not at all simply feeders for professional rugby. rugby model is different but not focused on pro rugby alone KillingFields (Limerick) - Posts: 3669 - 25/09/2023 11:02:55 2505552 Link 0 |
