Alarm bells ringing? Why? Attendances have been phenomenal nationally, this weekend there were attendances of 10/15,000 at venues like Roscommon, Cork, Mullingar, Castlebar, Clones, not to mention 30,000 at underage hurling finals in Thurles. Kildare followers clearly don't rate chances of beating Dubs

7,000 Dubs travelling to see a game that was no more important than a league game is not too bad.

Attendances reflect the bad planning of the groups in my opinion.

Dublin Vs Kildare (third time this year), Cork Vs Kerry, Armagh VsTyrone, Sligo Roscommon, Donegal Vs Derry - not really blazing a trail in change from the provincials is it. May as well be the provincials. Bad planning

It's stupid that Dublin and Kildare can play each other twice in a few weeks.

Seriously - it's 2+ hours to Roscommon
It's an hour and a half to Cavan from Armagh

Phenomenal?? Was only 6,000 in clones and don't think numbers were high anywhere else, as expected people have seen the light with this system €€€...3 near meaningless games at €25 each, GAA took support for granted with no package deals and its hitting them now.

The attendance at many of the football matchs ranged from average to very very poor in the case of Dublin v kildare .
It's practically all down to the deteriorating entertainment of games . As said earlier when you have did hard Gaelic football people like Peter Canavan & Tomas O Se bemoaning the poor fare on offer there's a serious problem . Joe Brolly & Pat Spillane on about it long before these men .
It wasn't the warm day or bank holiday weekend as a huge crowd went to the underage hurling in thurles . Speaking to a Dublin long standing season ticket holder during the week who was going to miss his first football match years, he said the Roscommon Dublin game was the watershed moment in unwatchable Gaelic football for him , many others stopped going over the past few years .
In a sizeable well known bar briefly in the afternoon yesterday in Limerick, three tvs on Hurling -Formula 1 - racing on the three tvs , the owner said nobody asks to watch Gaelic football anymore .
Lots of people out there with their heads in the sand about 30 men crammed in one half of the field and how un entertaining it is to watch unless one of the 30 is a family member .

Some of the low attendance figures need to factor in the variables.
1. Everyone is out again next week when a win will actually have some relevance.
2. It's a bank holiday weekend with the sun splitting the stones
3. There is nowhere affordable to stay if you wanted to make a weekend of it
4. Paying €660 (€60 tickets for family, €400 accommodation, €50 diesel, €150 in food) Rocking up to a 15 men behind the ball snore fest in the blistering heat at a bad time on the bank holiday weekend in some inland town isn't enticing for most people.

If the matches were on Friday evening and Monday you'd get better attendences.

11k in Castlebar is a very poor turnout. Goes to show there are too many games. Normally we would get more at home league games. The championship won't catch fire until the knockout stages start.

Replying To realdub:  "The attendance in Kilkenny should concern the GAA. There would normally be a very sizeable contingent of both Dublin and Kikdare supporters that would normally LOVE this type of occasion.

Obviously many were not that interested."
Yes but there wasnt a bed to be got in Kilkenny city or for miles around with the Cat Laughs festival on and fewer tourist accommodation options available due to other well known factors. Most of ye Dubs, when ye do get an away match, like to make a weekend of it but that option was not available to ye this weekend without accommodation being booked months in advance.

Someone on Twitter quipped that the crowd at the Longford v Carlow game in Portlaoise was so small that the guy on the PA system might announce the crowd to the teams.

Football last week paled in comparison to the Dublin/Galway hurling match before it. But that's generally true of any football match.

I don't really get the sanctimonious frowning upon Roscommon. They did nothing outside of the rules and it was exciting. Much prefer to watch that than one side games.

The real problem is the amount of games that are really only padding before the main event. A bit like the silly hurling qualifying groups in early 2000s which were also generally poorly attended. Was at Dublin v Limerick down there around that time and I'd safely say there wasn't 4,000 there. Game we should have won by the way!

Your missing the point .

It's not just Dublin v kildare , all the other games were miles off the crowds these fixtures used to attract , Gaelic football is losing spectators on a weekly basis as negative tactics after negative tactics drive away the casual punter and even the quite interested punter . Most teams these days consist of 3 or 4 Gaelic footballers and 10 or 11 fellows that could represent Ireland in the Olympics in decathlon but can't play Gaelic football .

Unless someone says STOP this borefest type of Gaelic football been put on their will be very very few left going to Gaelic football matchs .

Got it confirmed from officials that it attendance figure read out over the PA in Hyde Park yesterday was a few thousand below the actual attendance. Apparently issues with connacht council scanners with the sun.

Attendance was 90% Rossies, all my years travelling to matches that's the lowest turn out I've seen from Sligo.

There were around 8k in the Hyde.
Don't know where that 5,773 came from.
Seems the scanners were only making token effors to scan tickets at the gate.

Thats right half way, do you want people from west of Galway city driving 3 or 4 hours to Cavan and Armagh doing 45 miles?

A lot of the people complaining about modern Gaelic football are the same people who watch dozens of boring soccer games on TV all year and maybe even travel to England to watch them. I appreciate that Gaelic football isn't what it was but it is still better than soccer.
I thought the first half of the Ulster final was a boring watch, people were just chatting in the stands and some weren't even watching the game.
