Limerick Hurling thread 2023

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Overconfidence is the rock may teams perished on and in Limerick we have a habit of doing that.
Kilkenny are a fine team and need to be treated with caution , as said earlier they were rank outsiders in 2019 and turned us over. Their Under 20s beat a highly rated Limerick team in last years All Ireland final , Senior 2007 Final etc etc .
In Finals logic can often go out the window.

Current form lines would suggest a Limerick win i.e Limk performance against Galway and Kilkenny v Clare. However Limk performance v Galway was considerable higher than all the Munster Championship matches. One constant with Kilkenny is that they will bring physicality and a fighting spirit however I do think that Limerick have better players and will ultimately prevail. If Limk's form dips back to the Munster Championship matches and Kilkenny can hold the Limk full forward line they have a chance. Although logic can go out the window if you look back through the history of the All Irelands favourites have generally prevailed. If I recall Limk where 7/4 to win in 2018 v Galway and I dont think there has been any other underdog that has won in recent years.

Replying To Dealer:  "The number of ex KK players in the media is very high. As a result, the conversation is skewed to their view which is based off of their own experiences of success. I see no evidence that KK have improved one iota from last year. I don't think that they are even the second best team in the country. I'm grateful that they beat Clare because I think that the Banner are a far bigger threat for us to overcome."
I'd agree that Clare would have had more weapons they can hurt us with in terms of players and skill but KK have that will to win and psychology of winning engrained into them, they won't be intimated by the day or the opposition or the huge crowds or hype, they will relish it. It still took a game for the ages from Gearoid Hegarty to take them down last year, they just hung on in there all the time. They also have that bit of "cuteness" that many others don't. Any time we have met in recent years the games have been tight on the scoreboard even if we have had the better of it on the day. KK have been very efficient on the scoreboard against us.

I think its fair to say, without sounding over confident, that we are trending the right way and performances have been improved been improving game on game, a fit Cian Lynch makes and untold difference to this team and could be the difference from them being very good to being great. I think we will get a great performance from Limerick on the day.

Galway. They were beyond unfortunate to beat KK in the Leinster final. They were a lot better than Tipp in the quarter final and they were the closest to us last year. At the start of the past few years, I've looked at them as the primary danger because they matched up to us in a lot of aspects.

I hope Limerick win obviously and If we play our best stuff for 75 minutes will do it.
My only concern is that we haven't put in a full 70 minute performance in a number of the matches this year. (I'm thinking fourth Quarter v Clare in Limerick, First Half v Tipperary in Thurles and First 25 minutes V Galway in the semi).

A start against Kilkenny in the final, like we had against Galway in the semi final, could easily put us into 2019 territory chasing a lead and never quite catching them.

While Galway were playing well for the first 25 min and built up a lead, Limerick were able to up the work rate, rain them and rain them in, and once we got ahead, Galway were a beaten docket and never looked like coming back at us. Kilkenny are the masters of dogging it out and coming back again and again and again. Look at the Leinster Final this year they were well on top for a period then, Galway got ahead of them put them under all sorts of pressure but they dogged it out and won it with the last puck of the Game. Against Clare they started well built up a lead and when Clare threw the Kitchen sink at them (and even went ahead of them in the second half) they responded and saw it out. Kilkenny are never beat until you have passed the Red Cow with your two hands welded to the cup.

If you play your best stuff for 75 minutes you will win by 15. But it very rare a team plays there best stuff for 75 minutes.

How will the weather ,heavy rain forecast, affect the outcome?

Absolutely bucketing down last ten hours and I'm not far from Croke Park. If it was Parnell the match would be called off. Pitch will be fine of course that way but if it keeps up it will definitely have an impact. Chances of random events increases.

Limerick cannot take sideline cuts. They lack that skill. And hope Galway will punish them next time out.
