Now the dust has settled hopefully the admin will let me have my say. I had a great grá for down football since the early 00's coulter, Poland Clarke etc but ever since kilcoo came on the National stage and their attitude this cocky stuff doesn't kick scores. Delighted they were bet, if they spend less time focusing on themselves and playing as a unit they'd have won tailt. Sportsfanatic90 (Westmeath) - Posts: 223 - 16/07/2023 19:41:11 2494897 Link 2 |
What are you on about "disco muscles"? And why are you having a go at Kilcoo? Down have done nothing for years until a kilcoo man took the managers job. Far from the finished article and full credit to O'Rourke's Meath men in the final, but at least we have been winning some games again this season. Clearly haven't been watching down football in recent times By the managers standards this season is a fail, but this was his first with the lads who where miles of the pace in recent times so there would have been a lot of work put in to the physical side. I for one think this was a good enough year and one the lads will have gained the experience for next year and the coming years. Have to remember also Barry ohagan blow was massive for us he has been our top marksman for a while also so hopefully he comes back better than ever. The stigma of "killcoo lads or manager" is the reason for so so long our county has suffered. They had their reasons for not sending many men they had a goal and a dream which they achieved and absolutely fair play to them. With the lads involved this year two or three of them haven't put a foot wrong and can be proud of their performance in the final, the other lads have now learned a lot and know what must be done to improve. Down gaa is in a better place than last year and that's simply down to the manager. There's no doubt in my mind he's the best man for the job tho I would maybe like to see him over see the development teams and under age teams to an extent. Down need to develop a style of football and stick to it and start it young so when the boys get to minor and u20 they're competing with the top teams, lavo is at the wheel and I shall be following!! I knew that we would not have learned from the previous meeting with Meath, everyone in the county knew about the goalkeeper having a mistake in him, and then you start seeing social media posts of men who have done nothing in a down shirt this year parading about like they are Rockstar's, very surprised the management team allowed this to happen. Buzz round the county not as loud this morning. It was an off day and up until that goal we were still in it, but as a management team placed all around the ground how do they not see the aerial threat that was causing us hell? To slow to make changes and any that did come in did not have long enough to put stamp on game, Have to ask the question was Poland, Finn, McPartland, McEvoy so far off the pace that they only seen a few mins or none at all. Chatting with a few Players on Saturday and they were not happy with calls made during week and on the day! Certain Problem player brought back in when work wasn't done just for photo shoot. Who was the "certain player". Time to learn and move on, looking forward to what's shaping to be a great club championships this year, could go a lot of ways which makes great viewing, the down championship is one of the best and most competitive around

As a neutral in croke park I don't think it's good look for Down football to have a player who showed no respect to Down with his comments last year, on the field. The same player who was poor on Saturday also had the petulance of a child when he stormed down the tunnel after the final whistle, not even having the manners and respect to watch the presentation with the rest of his team mates. shaggylegend (Monaghan) - Posts: 1941 - 19/07/2023 10:19:22 2495554 Link 0 |
I read that Conor Laverty said the dressing room was gutted by the loss against Meath and I can believe that. It would be easy to go over board with the criticism but it would be pretty pointless bearing in mind the really low point Down had reached in the season before the new management took over. The player you are talking about was kicking two or three from play most games and covered every inch of the pitch in those same games. Everyone can have a bad day.

Everyone can have a bad day but don't storm off down the tunnel like a child. It's a player for me who's attitude stinks

Dissapointing end to what otherwise was an overall positive year. Considering Down couldn't buy a win last year, and we've been in the doldrums for a large part of the last decade there is definite signs of green shoots. 2 Ulster u20 titles in the last 3 years is also significant. I don't think anyone was expecting miracles and it is still a long road to travel for Down football to get back to the top table but at least it feels like we're pointing in the right direction at long last. From the outset guys I just want to say that I'm not here to gloat or goad Down posters in any way. I have a very healthy respect for Down, and Ive had many friends who lived and played in the county. I hope Down press on in the coming years as this year has produced undeniable green shoots. Fair play for a fine year. Young_gael (Meath) - Posts: 596 - 27/07/2023 07:50:51 2497202 Link 2 |
The reason why down are **** is because it isn't kilcoo. Mentality's are different. berba9 (Down) - Posts: 2 - 04/08/2023 05:52:58 2498959 Link 0 |
Strange comment. Would anyone want to play for a club other than their own? It's Carryduff v Loughinisland tonight to decide who comes top of the league. Loads of great players with winning mentality to see in this one. Kilcoo will be a major threat in the Championship but things are much more open in club football this season. Very quiet on here, so thought I'd resurrect the chat.....Vital we got out of Div.3 this year and job well done. Hoping the team can take another step forward next wknd in Croke Park and put the poor Tailteann final performance last year out of their system......There is real incremental progress being made, still don't think we'll necessarily set the world alight this year but there's definitely a good scalp in them + teams won't fancy coming to Newry again (and it's been a long time since we can say anything like that)......Really hoping we can make it into the Sam Maguire this year (either as Div.3 winners or who knows a run in Ulster) as so important to this group's development to get the experience of playing at a higher level. In truth we'd probably still struggle against the top tier teams but if this management team and group of players can stick together over the next few years I think we'll see steady progress and brighter days ahead......Good to see positivity return and a bit of a buzz about the senior set-up as it's been sadly lacking this past decade......Best of luck Sunday and a wee bit of silverware in Croke Park would do them no harm at all even if only Div.3 but still counts as progression given where we're coming from (I can't remember the last piece of anyway meaningful silverware which Down have won at Snr level, is it the 94 All-Ireland??!!).......Wouldn't be taking Westmeath lightly though + with Heslin back they'll be tough enough to beat. Down do it again tailteann cup all over. Less focus on pulling up the shorts and more focus on playing the game. Delighted Sportsfanatic90 (Westmeath) - Posts: 223 - 30/03/2024 21:19:44 2534705 Link 1 |
Westmeath man here. Bad form. The only thing worse than a sore loser is a sore winner.

Very disappointing result (and largely performance) Saturday night. Was hopeful of a win in the knowledge that Westemeath would be tough to beat but they were well worth their win and congrats. It does leave Down with a lot of questions hanging over the team but I'm sure the management and squad can regroup for championship v Antrim week after next......A few things worth noting though, we seemed to really lose our way as the game wore on, sure Westmeath got bodies back and crowded Down out but wrong options were taken time and time again. Felt we should have had more on the scoreboard by half time and it came back to bite us. Mourne.Identidy (Down) - Posts: 20 - 02/04/2024 22:28:00 2535284 Link 0 |
Lads, for those heading to Clones on Saturday week. If you're heading through Ballybay you might be better taking the left at Pearse Park (look out for the Bingo sign) go over the Avenue and you'll come out at the old Riverdale Hotel, then take a right and left in middle of the town to Clones. Saves you the bottle neck at Centra and you're going with the turn for Clones. FootblockREF (Monaghan) - Posts: 567 - 16/04/2024 11:17:52 2538304 Link 0 |
