A good few of that team had just stepped off a transatlantic flight after a school holiday in America. 2 more played in the minor AIQF against Clare the same day and missed the game against Tyrone altogether. Hardly ideal preparation. At the same time that's the highest level a Wexford minor football team has played at for many years. Well done to them all and hopefully they kick on at u20.

Yeah it's a pity. Tyrone apparently have a very good team and are only second to Derry in Ulster, ended up in tier 2 by virtue of the fact they were on derry side of the draw in ulster and lost at semi final stage I think. Then ye have around 2 thirds of that football team getting off a flight from New York in the middle of the night on Sunday morning, a 4 hrs plus trip on a bus on Monday afternoon minus your dual players to play Tyrone in their back yard! All in all it was always going to be a pretty tall order which is unfortunate really. I do think we need to be there competing against these teams though but in reality ye need every little thing going for ye to stand a chance. All of a sudden summer hasn't even began and we have 1 team left standing in the county. Mad really! tearintom (Wexford) - Posts: 1427 - 04/06/2024 09:42:08 2549343 Link 0 |
rarely post but read a lot. A lot of time for your posts Viking but I cannot agree this time. We have only beaten the bottom teams this year. Waterford, London, Carlow, Longford, Tipperary. Any time we played a team above the worst 5 teams, we have lost. Leitrim, Laois, Louth, Sligo, Antrim, and lost to a very bad Tipp team. This talk of a good brand of exciting football is just nonsense. I hear it from people around the county. Ah we lost but play good football. Is that all we are. Gallant losers. The brand of football is the wrong brand of football when we can't beat anyone except the worst handful of teams. Are we better than this? Who knows when the team is set up so poorly and sent to play a club football style. We have conceded 3-5 to Tipp, 2-21 to Sligo, 1-15 to Antrim, 4-10 to Louth in our last four games. 10 goals in 4 games. An average of over 20 points a game conceded. This is ridiculous lads. Hegarty has failed twice to get out of division 4. Any other manager would have gotten their p45 by now. And for lads to be saying there's a good brand of football and we are in good shape is just laughable I'm afraid lads. OldSchoolRules (Australia) - Posts: 29 - 04/06/2024 13:54:17 2549418 Link 0 |
We should've won the games against Leitrim, Antrim and Tipp. Our forwards made poor choices against Antrim going for goals when we should've taken our points, and we shot numerous bad wides against Tipp and Leitrim. Sligo and Louth especially were just better than us tbh. They had a few top class players and in general better ballers all through their teams. And Laois were better than us on the day, our lads looked slow to the ball all over the pitch. As regards div4 every one of 6 teams seem to expect to get out of it every year. But only 2 go up. Have a read of a few of the other threads on this forum. Carlow, Leitrim, Longford etc. In 2022 we only won twice and finished 6th. Last year we won 3 and finished 4th, 2 points behind 2nd. This year we won 5 and just missed out on score difference. We are improving. I've been to most of our games the last few years and we are definitely better. I do think we need to be more cynical at the back and clinical at the front, we also need a reliable long range free/45 taker. But apart from that I think we are moving in the right direction. Looking forwards to next year hopefully the 2 Brooks will be back, and some of the u20s like Cooke-Leonard might make the step up. Cian Hughes being injured most of the year didn't help either. Just out of interest who do you think would be interested in our manager job who would do a better job than Hegarty has so far? Not score difference, head to head

Should've won, but didn't. Forwards making poor choices comes down to coaching. Bad wides also comes down to coaching. I bet if you asked our players they don't think Sligo have more talented players than we do. We were smashed by both Laois and Sligo, neither team is anything special. Most notable against Laois was how poorly we were set up and how the line was lost as to what to do. Even the Leitrim game with the phantom penalty, for Leitrim to work the ball into our box untouched with the game on the line was scandalous. Many think things are better because they like the style of play. It's style over substance. Attacking but losing football. Some things have gone well, but I feel Hegarty is getting a pass for failure that almost anybody else wouldn't get, and nobody else in the past has got. A better manager would be getting better results. I won't name a local I'd put in instead , although I have two names I'll keep to myself. We are at a disadvantage attracting top outside managers due to geographic location. OldSchoolRules (Australia) - Posts: 29 - 04/06/2024 21:48:19 2549552 Link 1 |
Against Laois we were 2nd to every ball. Some of that has to be on the players. As regards outside managers Ryan was the only one who had any real success that lasted any length. I'm not sure that's the way forward for us. A better manager might get better results, but a worse one probably won't. Personally I think Hegarty should get another year with goals set, and if he achieves them then give him more time. we came so close last year. But it's not my decision either way.

You really should watch a game before commenting on it. If you had watched the Leitrim game you'd know that the phantom penalty came from a long, hopeful delivery into our box, they didn't " work the ball into our box untouched". But don't ket the facts get in the way of your anti Hegarty agenda !! Yellaman (Wexford) - Posts: 126 - 06/06/2024 22:45:21 2549925 Link 0 |

Yellaman, I think you are missing the point, it came from a short K/O that was worked by the Leitrim defence untouched by any Wexford player to the wexford 65 before the high ball was kicked in for the penalty to be awarded. Terrible call by the referee but very naive from a Wexford point of view

We should've been out of sight long before that. Kicked some terrible wides including from placed balls.

In fairness, I think that sort of thing has become the norm in football, rather than being a fault of this Wexford side. Teams are often allowed to take a short kick-out and work the ball up to around midfield or the opposition 65 before there's any sort of pressure being put on them at all by a defending team that has withdrawn probably 12 or 13 or even more of its own players to inside their own 65. It's actually one of the great faults of football in general. The only difference here was that Leitrim lobbed in a high ball that led to the dubious penalty, rather than continuing to play it back and forth and across the field while probing for an opening, as usually happens. They didn't have the time for all the crossfield handpassing.

I realise that. Time was running out. My point was simply that it's not unusual for a team to be allowed work the ball from a kick-out up to around the opposition 65 without too much pressure being put on them, rather than that being a specific fault of this Wexford team.

No sir, I'm not missing the point. I was merely pointing your error when you claim that Leitrim worked the ball into our box untouched.

Agreed that the game should have been wrapped up, when the lads battled back so we'll in the second half. BTW, I went up to Gorey tonight to watch the league final, castletown v kilanerin. Castletown looked a far better team but were wasteful from frees & play. Appearantly Kilanerin were fairly understrength and seemed to run out of ideas in last quarter. D brooks was called up to take one free late on, aprox 45metres, and nailed. Just what Wexford have been missing this year. Yellaman (Wexford) - Posts: 126 - 07/06/2024 21:54:10 2550097 Link 0 |
We would be in div3 and at least a TC quarter final if we had someone to kick long range frees/45s.
