Laois were given a free, rightly, after a late tackle on lad who had delivered a long ball into square. Ref (your boy Gearóid) then awarded a penalty, Presumably on basis of "where the ball landed." Not sure if that is actually the correct rule, and neither were the commentators. Ref then consulted linesmen and umpires and booked the corner back! Penalty taken and missed.

It was a bit chaotic but managing chaos is often the key to success in any sphere!

He's a Tipp man living in Wexford, few refs in that scenario, Sean Stack originally a Clare man, Paud O'Dwyer is originally from Wexford.

Time will tell, but I think you're mad moving home games to Croker.

How many times does a result have to happen over a 5 or 6 year period before it isn't considered an upset any more?

Good, another person to complain to about this crazy decision on the part of our hurlers/management team. Whatever hope we had in PP is gone v Galway in particular. But PP is such an advantage to Dublin I see it as crazy to give it up. It will be the first thing I and many other Dublin supporters will be pointing to if we get null points from these. It's definitely a bold step by management. Croke Park is 144x86 metres. Parnell is 141x82 metres. Hard to believe 2 extra metres each side is going to make any difference to a game of hurling.

Parnell was only ever an advantage when it was packed. And opposition was not fully geared up for what was going to be thrown at them, Especially under Anthony when he had them "like lunatics" as he once himself described Clare under Loughnane. If you had Conn and Ciaran that time you wouldn't have been too far from an AI.

Callaghan was undoubtedly a huge loss. He was even more impressive at under 21 than he was with Cuala. But there's no point in rueing all that. It happens in other counties as well. The one that really annoyed me was when Gilroy told Rory O'Carroll that he had to choose the senior footballers in 2010 which meant that he could no longer play with the under 21s. He missed out on a Leinster medal when Dublin beat your fellas. He was also a big loss when they were well beaten by Galway in the semi final. One possible benefit of the fewer lads playing both at a serious level, even at club, is that the current crop of minors and 20s should mostly stay hurling. Makings of a decent team there if so. Just because I'm a bit of a numbers nerd....that means the Croke Park pitch is 7% bigger than Parnell Park. In these days of numerical analysis, sports science, GPS tracking, and all the rest, 7% might be seen as a significant difference all right. But I'm that not much of a nerd to be able to explain why! Parnell seems much smaller than it is, Very claustrophobic when it's full. Supporters can nearly touch the players. Indeed, it has happened! I'd say it's that aspect of it rather than the dimensions that might have been an advantage. I don't think it is any more, and the surface can be really dreadful even in the Summer, That was another factor in MOD choosing the play in Croke Park I hear, We'll know on Saturday week if he made the right one. Barney, I don't know much about non-senior Dublin hurling or football.. But how many, if any, of this U20 team are dual players? I'm thinking along the lines that in most cases in Dublin, if a player has to choose /prioritise between hurling and football, they nearly always, or mostly, choose football.

We don't have to worry about now. Will be missing Paddy Doyle for rest of 20s I think. All in same boat in that regards of course.

Comfortable win over Westmeath. Another terrible start but outscored them by a wide margin for the rest of the match. A few worrying looking injuries including Eoghan O'Donnell. BarneyGrant (Dublin) - Posts: 3118 - 29/04/2023 19:52:07 2474562 Link 0 |
