So Derek Lyng is taking over at Kilkenny...worryingly with the championship up and running in Dublin still no word on the new manager here. Maybe Martin Fogarty would fancy it bad.monkey (USA) - Posts: 4643 - 05/08/2022 15:05:25 2436346 Link 0 |

I've heard (now please take this with a pinch of salt) that Davy Fitz was sounded out for Offaly but is going to Dublin. Anthony Cunningham being lined up for Offaly as a result. ahsure. (Galway) - Posts: 1632 - 06/08/2022 09:52:57 2436388 Link 0 |
Yeah looking more like Davy Fitz each day, maybe he will get a short term improvement in the team bad.monkey (USA) - Posts: 4643 - 06/08/2022 15:30:11 2436441 Link 0 |

Micheal Donoghue appointed hurling manager. I have to say it was a surpise (a very happy one), I hadnt heard him mentioned anywhere in relation to the job. Great work by the county board to get him in. bad.monkey (USA) - Posts: 4643 - 22/08/2022 13:41:21 2438276 Link 0 |
Good choice for Dublin.

A bit surprised but definately a shrewd appointment. Did great work with Galway and comes across as very clever as well as calm. Good choice I think but it's a tough gig. CiarraiMick (Dublin) - Posts: 3844 - 22/08/2022 14:56:33 2438287 Link 0 |
Certainly not any easy job especially you see Con O'Callaghan scoring 1-6 and Eoghan O'Donnell scoring 1-3 in the Football championship yesterday in Dublin. But he seems like he will be a much needed steady hand. bad.monkey (USA) - Posts: 4643 - 22/08/2022 15:11:29 2438289 Link 0 |
Dublin needed Davy to raise the profile of the game like he did in Wexford in my opinion. ExiledInWex (Dublin) - Posts: 1259 - 23/08/2022 10:40:29 2438353 Link 1 |
MoD has good senior intercounty success which is more than Mattie Kenny achieved. I agree Eoghan O Donnell is huge. Dublin need him hurling. Maybe MoD can convince some of the senior football panel to do a Conal Keaney. Kilkenny or Conn O Callaghan would be a bit of a coup for talks sake.

People need to forget about convincing any of the football panel to come back hurling. They're too long gone from regular hurling to ever make an impact at inter-county. Con could've maybe but even with him it's too late now I think. MesAmis (Dublin) - Posts: 13779 - 23/08/2022 13:11:19 2438399 Link 1 |
It's more for psychological reasons rather than directly to do with winning hurling games in the short term. If a high profile player could be persuaded to switch codes it might encourage younger lads to pick hurling rather than football.

I think this is a good appointment for Dublin. I wonder if he needs to get a different type of player around the middle of the field in the Will O'Donoghue mould? slayer (Limerick) - Posts: 6480 - 23/08/2022 16:16:44 2438444 Link 0 |
He could do with a couple of them to be fair.

I dunno, I think if a player that hasn't played any serious hurling, like Ciarán Kilkenny, for nearly 10 years, can walk onto the Dublin Senior Panel then we're in even bigger trouble then anyone realises. Con could maybe do it, 4 or 5 years ago he could've been a game changer for the hurlers but I think he's too far gone. Keaney did it because he was a freakish talent and even at that he was nowhere near the player that he could have been had he stayed hurling. In the last few years Con O'Callaghan, Ciarán Kilkenny, Cormac Costello, Eric Lowdnes, Diarmuid Connolly, Jonny Cooper, Emmet Ó Conghaile, Tomás Brady were all stand out hurlers but chose football. Go a little further back and you have Conal Keaney and Shane Ryan too. Even Bernard Brogan chose football despite making the minor hurling panel and missing out on the football panel! It's not about getting them back, it's about getting some of the them to choose hurling at 15/16/17 imo. The way to do that is to work with what we've got and create something worth choosing. This seems a great appointment for Dublin. Very pleased to see Donoghue managing again. Delighted to see Shane O'Brien involved too. My Westmeath contacts spoke very highly about him. LaLu (Louth) - Posts: 235 - 24/08/2022 19:10:47 2438597 Link 0 |
I get that Viking and no offence but I think there was an All-Ireland in that Galway team and the stars aligned for them. I don't think there is an All-Ireland in us, but with everybody involved there could be a Leinster. That said, unfortunately our underage record has dis-improved in recent years. We aren't typically able for Wexford, Kilkenny, Galway. I always say it is not the be all and end all but you need 2-3 hurlers per year off every underage team forcing these lads out. I think Davy would have brought hype, and a jolt which Dublin hurling needs. I will be 100% behind Michael and his team but think we should have gone all out for Davy. Maybe they did and he wasn't interested, Davy only goes where he sees a real profile raising job and genuine contenders. ExiledInWex (Dublin) - Posts: 1259 - 25/08/2022 10:52:24 2438635 Link 0 |
It'd be interesting to talk to the people involved in Dublin underage squads too (hurling). I'm not sure how it works tbh but I'd imagine seeing so many of their young talents give up on intercounty hurling, and choosing football instead after so much effort put into their development, must be very disheartening.
