Replying To TheFlaker:  "I would agree to a certain degree on a lot of that. Mayo do play midfielders in forward roles. Carney has huge potential but as a midfielder. And his confidence has been knocked. J Flynn also a midfielder. Has done well in fairness as a half forward but not his natural position. I have so much respect for O Shea after this year. He was brilliant so won't have him being criticised. Set up tonnes and won any amount of frees. Also agree on Coen."
Sadly that's the way game is going, look at our team I'd say we have 4 to 5midfielders in our starting 15.

Carney should be well able to do what Flynn did v Derry or McDaid at weekend. At some stage tower etc shoulda got a go to trouble scoreboard

One issue ye don't have no more then us is options between 5-12

The use or lack of hession got this yr was bizarre.

Less of the delusion when it comes to talk about beating the current semi finalists please."

Replying To jm25:  "Mayo big issue seems to be loyalty to players.

Stephen Coen is there 10 years and is solid but unspectacular but when we play ye if he is starting ahead of likes of hession McLaughlin I'm delighted

Jack Carney is a fine player but has 8pts in 16 games but is always selected between 8-15

Compared to Boland who face doesn't fit one bad performance and he's gone

Compared to Flynn Mcdaid tierney ruane there is no end product.

Then there is oshea who for as well as he's played this year at the end of his work there is very little final product unless he wins a free."
Stephen is there because he is so solid, boring even, a good leader. Chips in with a few scores. Hession looks great going forward in full flight, not a great defender in comparison to the alternatives. McLaughlin is a feast or a famine. Can make a great burst up the field but it's a lottery where he'll kick it. And he's progressing in leaps and bounds for a man that didn't play football and is always gonna get stuck in. He'll get there soon enough and Hession's defending will improve but I'd rather unspectacular Coen to Hession and McLaughlin at this stage. We'll see what they bring in the league next year. Defence definitely improved in 2024. But we got the wrong results in three games that mattered. We were too cautious after 60 mins. We need to find when to bring chaos and when to be cautious.

Is it really lost pity though? Hession there a while now but obviously not performing in training? I don't know. Coen gets a lot of stick within Mayo (a club mate of mine so maybe I'm biased) but he does a job. O'Se has a lot of critics within and outside the county myself included but I think he's a lighting rod when it comes to Mayo not performing.

His performances in finals of course has not been good as opposed to someone like Keegan who always performed in finals.

You take Coen, The two O'Connors and O'Se and that's all that left from the core Mayo team of a few years ago.

The issues lie closer to home. The standard of Mayo club football has fallen off a cliff. When the last time we won a senior Connacht club title? Our minor team got to a semi final this year but were nowhere near a much bigger and better Armagh team. Our u20s were a disaster. Question need to asked.

Your minors won the last three Connacht minor titles so something brewing there again. Should be the team to beat with that pick at U20 Connacht in 2025.

James Horan last year spoke about the young players coming through and said Club senior football would be strong by 2025,26 we talked up the Mayo town teams as ones to watch.

Town teams have huge picks and are getting stronger but I assume this is the same in most counties? Claremorris my nearest town are an enigma in Mayo football. They produce very good underage teams but can't translate that to senior success and they have failed to win a county title since the 70s.

Castlebar, Ballina, Westport, Ballinrobe, Breaffy (suburb of Castlebar) and even the likes of Parke (just outside Castlebar) all strong or getting strong.

What I'm watching at club level worries me but look it may change soon (hopefully). I feel we manufacturing or producing too many athletes and not enough footballers with the smarts and skills to take that chance. Football is very "safe" now days where possession and safety first is the mantra.

Aido looks like he's gonna stay for 2025. I think he deserves his place in the squad, 2024 was one of his best years for a good while.

A player that deserves much more praise tham the silly nasty comments he has recieved at times.A great servant to Mayo and a player I always enjoyed watching from his tour de force at midfield v Cork in 2011 to the present day.He had a very good year this year and as long as he can offer something positive to the team why should nt he stay on..

Well said. As I always said it's up to the younger players to push the older ones out. That said I would keep him away from the starting 15 next year in the league. Give young players a run of games no matter how bad it goes. You can only improve with competitive games. We know what AOS brings.

Aos has been a brilliant servant to Mayo football. He hope he goes out on his own terms but footballers rarely do. Lee Keegan and Michael Murphy are 2 that quit while they were ahead but it's not uncommon for players to go to the well once too often. Did a few Dublin players stay too long ?

In what sense was Murphy ahead when he quit? I thought he was mediocre enough for his last couple of seasons, very obviously in the decline phase of his intercounty life cycle.

He was playing midfield, half forward, full forward. They were using him every where. At one stage I expected that he would be asked to take the kick outs and be in midfield to catch them when they arrived. He was plugging gaps everywhere

The one thing that deteriorates most as a player goes through his 30s is pace. Aidans game was never based on pace . He was brilliant this year , and why not again next year. Yes by all means use him sparingly in the league in order to keep him fresh for championship, and to blood new new players. But it baffles me to hear the same people who are saying that KMcS was wrong to sub him in games this year are now saying that he should retire or be used only as an impact sub next year.
He is also an entertaining player to watch as despite his limitations in terms of speed and right foot , he can do things that no other player can do. Like Clifford , Walsh, Comer, these special types of players are what make the matches entertaining. Lets hope he plays a big part again next year...although I'm hoping that ye rest him v Galway!

And you call that quitting while you're ahead. It's not what I'd call it.
