that would be dermot mcabe i take it not the bull mcabe . it will be a great appointment . lets hope he appoints mark mchugh and his own good brother martin and maybe persuades john keane to continue his good work

He was a great player for cavan and has done well managing gowna in club football. if rumours are true, he has mark mchugh involved which will be great. Hopefully john keane stays involved as I think that's important. Westmeath will be on transition but div 2 is not as daunting as previous years and a few winnable games. Staying safe in div 2 and been competitive on leinster is surely the target.

Is mickey graham gonna be part of dermot mccabes management team , any word on who's involved ? Is Mark mchugh realistic aswel or what's the view on his qualities in terms of coaching ? Management team is crucial , a few experienced big names turns it into a very interesting appointment with some potential . Is it a gimme that manager gets go ahead tomorrow night or could clubs vote against and throw spanner in the works ? Hard to believe how view could be put forward that westmeath not attractive prospect to coach given level we operated at in championship and league promotion , or is that a rose tinted glasses opinion philbrown (Westmeath) - Posts: 236 - 14/10/2024 18:36:57 2574912 Link 0 |
The hits were hard but overall not malicious in nature. A few sly trips and blocks off the ball went unpunished. Thought Fola lucky to be on pitch before he was taken off. He had more ticks than a grandfather clock. Ref was best I've seen this year and controlled a game that could have easily spilled over. For those that think Loman underperformed, the consensus around me on the terrace was that the Downs have a lot more in the tank. Can't wait for Saturday. Just hope the weather allows a similar standard of game we seen yesterday.

Foy should be coming off the bench, with his energy and running from deep he can be a Kevin McMahon type finisher. I know the loss of Dempsey forced Dowdall's hand. The awareness from Heslin to recognize Fola was one on one, Nolan was caught badly out of position. The Downs tactic to lump the first couple of balls in on top of Mitchell set panic into St Loman's every time. Mitchell sucked in 4 or 5 St Loman's players leaving acres of space elsewhere. That's how the goal came about but Geoghegan needs to be goal side of Loughlin.

Is James McHugh also available?

Coming out ofcusack park yesterday a lot of downs fans were slating the referee but as a neutral I thought st lomans were on the harsher side of calls …. That was a free all day on Nathan Lally, Peter foy got a yellow card for a shoulder in the next play Niall Mitchell did the exact same thing to Jack Geoghegan that led to the ref blowing for over carrying and giving the downs a 21 yard free …. Fola was was man handled most the game yet a previous poster stated he was lucky to not be sent off …. Niall Mitchell was constantly looking to engage in fights and could count himself a bit lucky he wasn't punished abit more …all in all a great game but to say the downs didn't get calls is an abysmal shout when as a neutral I felt they got the rub of the green from the referee TheGaaMan77 (Westmeath) - Posts: 65 - 14/10/2024 19:43:24 2574936 Link 0 |
I logged back into the forum for the first time in years to comment on the final yesterday. What an exhibition of football. One of the best club games I think I've ever seen and one of the best games in any code in many years. While the teams set up defensively they tried to attack and make breaks. Great play, aggression on the ball, skill and athleticism and fair play. and a credit to the players management and clubs. Enda Kelly did a great job, not too fussy, let the game flow with advantage and got all the tough calls right. Doorman123 (Westmeath) - Posts: 1 - 14/10/2024 19:44:19 2574937 Link 3 |
The quality of football was brilliant in yesterday's final and agree with most of what you said. But there was 24 scores yesterday out of 28 shots. 28 shots in a game of football is very very low. Shooting percentage was through the roof. The reason not many shots were taken was because of how both team set up defensively- I'm not blaming the teams that is just how football is played these days. However your comment about the FRC coming to the replay to learn a few things is misleading as on another day that game could of ending 1-5 to 1-5 if both teams didn't bring their shooting boots.

I find it extremely hard to believe that you heard The Downs fans or indeed the Loman's fans discussing the referee because he was barely mentioned after the final whistle, the ultimate compliment to his performance. Anyone picking at his display as you've done is impossible to please. Presume same ref will be doing replay, he deserves to

As far as I am aware the referee is always changed for a replay, so that could be an interesting factor on Saturday. Details have been released… Junior B moved to 1pm Senior Replay at 3pm WmeathWarrior (Westmeath) - Posts: 64 - 15/10/2024 08:13:24 2574968 Link 0 |
Junior 2 not Junior B. Great for either Ballinagore or Delvin to get back up to Junior 1 next year

Uttee nonsense ref deserved criticism at times but this overboard and sometimes they get undue criticism me thinks it's always few moaners that will like to find a way blame the ref . From watching it ref had good game generally. Gaaforlife2023 (Longford) - Posts: 511 - 15/10/2024 09:37:33 2574987 Link 0 |
The size of the senior backroom teams listed in the county final programme. St. Loman's have 12 people with various different roles outlined and the Downs have 8. Compared to the final in 2018 when St. Loman's had 5 backroom staff and Mullingar Shamrocks had 4. It's no coincidence that the two best teams in the county have a large support system akin to inter county level or is there any need for all these people hanging around the back of the dressing room? Your thoughts please. Heavinwasthebest (Westmeath) - Posts: 3 - 15/10/2024 10:48:50 2575010 Link 0 |
As a well seasoned person who's been around the block I had spoken to a couple of downs men walking out and suggested he gave them nothing so I'm not asking you to believe me to be honest , I never once suggested the referee didn't perform wel I only backed up my opinion from my neutral point of view …. I thought the referee had a decent game and handled it well but I just didn't understand how someone could come to that conclusion when like I said I felt the downs got the rub of the green on certain calls but again that's not berating the referee that's just me suggesting the opinion that the downs were "robbed" is not the fairest of assumptions …

All of those listed on the programme certainly don't hang around. Every team has selectors, kit men, S&C coach etc. A video analyst is an exception obviously but apart from that, every team has what was listed on the programmes, and I'll go further to say that kit men, are a vital role in any club and certainly don't hang around. Manager, head coach, 2or 3 selectors, an S&C coach, 1or 2 kit men; every team has those at any level. And it's nice for them to recognized and listed on a programme I feel.

Exactly, I couldn't have put it better myself. It was a defensive game with both teams setting up a mirror image of each other. I had to laugh at the narrative during the build up to the game, I think it was Luke that said "we're two teams that are predominantly football teams and don't draw everyone behind the ball'(!!). The quality of the shooting was impressive and that's the main reason everyone left Cusack Park happy.
