It's not a massive upset but in the context of things it's huge for Plunkett's. They were very big and physical, which led to a lot of frees against but they gained more than they gave away from it. They went into their shell in the second half and it could have cost them but their defence was outstanding. Great to have a championship where at least 4 teams think they can win it. Hard luck to Na Piarsaig who fought back in the second half.

Na Piarsaigh had the likes of Davy Williams, Darragh Smith, Ryan Williams, Conor Heffernan, Alex Little, Kylan Heffernan, reigning champions and beat Plunketts by 18 points in group stages, Plunketts minus their best forward Eoin Meehan, the reaction of the Na Piarsaigh supporters during the closing stages and afterwards suggests it was nowhere on the cards, Plunketts had far greater hunger and desire, complacency was a factor in the Na Piarsaigh set up, resulting in a massive upset.

A brilliant win for Mullingar hurling which must make Plunketts firm favourites for 2025 senior B.We can argue all day whether it was a big surprise but the reality is Oliver Plunketts beat Clann Na Gael in the semi final and Na Piarsagh in the final both by a point.Clann had finished 1st in the league section and the LLG/Turin outfit 2nd which adds to their achievement.

Great win for Plunketts and they are doing super work at underage. Producing a lot of quality players and fielding two teams at many grades. Cullion nearby have quality teams and numbers coming through as well when you look at u12 up to u16 in particular. Hurling in Mullingar is thriving now and is being seen at County underage development squads. Most clubs in the county are putting in trojan work to be fair. Looking forward to seeing what talent is on display for Westmeath in Springfield on the 28th, the talk is a lot of youth involved which is brilliant but we still need our experienced and seasoned players!

Unfortunately didn't make the game in Springfield on Saturday, glad they supported a great cause as well. Any feedback on the game itself?

According to those at it there were four or five keepers used as Noel Conaty has retired, a great keeper in recent years, hard to replace, Kieran O' Brien from Castletown, Turin's Eoin Aughey and Jack Gillen were used in the match, Aonghus Clarke didn't feature,

I seen that some players won't be available for the early stages of the league and will return then towards the end of it. I presume that's a couple of experienced players. Conaty gave great service, excellent goalie and will be for the Gaels for another couple of seasons you'd imagine.

I was there and there were no Castletown players present. They had a club function but had their own session at Castletown that morning. But news isnt good regarding Aonghus Clarke and Niall O Brien. Eoin Aughey has promise bt its hard to judge from challenge matches.33 players present with a good few experienced players missing due to Christmas weddings.

What were the teams like? Who impressed?
Possibly too soon to say regarding Niall O'Brien and Aonghus Clarke, Bulfin did say recently that he will be without the services of a few players early in the league, could possibly be including those two who might want to recharge after a long year nearly into December with CTG.

Good to see a good number of players involved in fitzgibbon cup.

Good number?? Sorry Dheen, but I can't agree with you on this one.
I would say that the poor representation is a reflection of the fact that as a county we're not producing any volume of high quality hurlers through to senior. Half a dozen lads on the panels and how many will be playing when push comes to shove

Peter Clarke, Eamonn Cunneen, David Williams, Conor Gaffney etc will all start. David O'Reilly would be involved with UL if he wasn't injured I'm sure. We aren't going to ever have a huge number considering there's only 15 clubs in the county.

Good response. We're certainly producing more high quality young players than in past ten or fifteen years

Daragh McCormack,David Williams,Eoin Keyes,Shane Williams stood out.Niall Mitchell is a fine hurler but so often he is too unselfish. He needs to take his own score on occasion rather than always laying it off.I think unfortunately neither of the Castletown players mentioned will play any more intercounty hurling. The word around here is that they want to concentrate on club.Aonghus Clarke has been a great player for Westmeath over well over a decade

Thanks for the feedback Jobber. If that's the case regarding Aonghus Clarke and Niall O'Brien then you can understand, both have been involved since 17 years of age and as you said given great service to the county. I will reserve some hope as there's been no mention of them retiring as of yet!
Great to hear Darragh McCormack involved and playing well he was the shining light in a struggling Pollard side all last year.

Tough opening to Bulfin's management on Saturday when we face Laois. Our forward line missing Aonghus and Niall O' B while David O' Reilly is injured, Killian Doyle is travelling abroad and Darragh McCormack unavailable possibly due to rugby. Lot of pressure on David Williams who's only 20, new keeper too with Noel Conaty having retired.

Agree a huge renovation in one go.This league will be a big struggle but a lot of the young players have potential.Pity there is so much change though. But on the bright side Shane Williams,Eamonn Cuneen and Gary Greville are back analthough Conor Shaw and Davy Glennon can be added to your list. Hopefully Niall Mitchell will be back to his 2019-2022 form.

It's a transition period that's been coming, we just have to be patient with the young players during the league and allow them to find their feet. Fortunately in Peter Clarke, Eamonn Cunneen, David O'Reilly, David Williams, Darragh McCormack, Shane Williams etc their is talented young players there. It is likely Killian Doyle and co will return for Joe Mcdonagh which I've heard is what's happening, but the ideal scenario is to not have to rely on them if the young lads can hit the ground running. Best of luck for the year ahead to all involved.

How do people here think westmeath will do...it's one v difficult division to call.. Dublin and Waterford you expect a bit ahead but on a given day could be caught out by any of the other five..the other five teams,Offaly, westmeath, carlow, Antrim and laois so difficult, not a puck of a ball between them..player for player potential and quality westmeath might be a bit ahead, how they go as a team will have to see.
It's really difficult but if the team goes well third or fourth can be got.

Disappointing result for Colàiste Mhuire vs Castlecomer this afternoon, beaten 5-15 to 1-16 but final score doesn't do justice to the Mullingar side, very close for long spells, Castlecomer got a couple of fortuitous goals in the second half at the right time for them, strong looking Colaiste Mhuire team but the Kilkenny lads had an excellent corner forward, Kevin Buggy, he was a threat all through, Kian Loughlin was excellent on the frees, probably scored 9-10, don't think he missed any, Darragh Kenny was missing at wing back and a big loss, good to see a Westmeath school side competing with the Kilkenny schools, a lot of the Colaiste Mhuire team available next year and they had decent looking subs too with Dillon Burke, Sean Byrne, Aaron Connaire, Ted Aherne and Padraig Casey.
